Japanese Cooking
Pupils from Years 8 and 9 were able to try their hand
at Japanese cooking. Under the experienced eye of Mrs C. Carter they produced
a number of dishes- Chicken Teryaki, Miso soup (a type of vegetable broth),
sushi and egg-fried rice. Soup is served in bowls but in Japan spoons are not
used. The soup is "drunk" by placing one's head almost in the bowl
and "slurping" the soup. The louder the noise the greater the compliment
to the chef. Sushi, a staple of the Japanese diet, consists of rice (flavoured
on this occasion with fresh ginger and wasabi paste) and wrapped in other ingredients,
very frequently fresh fish. The final result, in keeping with the emphasis in
Japan on making every day objects as beautiful as possible, was a feast to the
eyes.
