New Life Band from Tanzania

18 October 2002

On 18th October, 2002 we were delighted to welcome to STRS the New Life Band from Tanzania. The Band, from a Christian ministry in Arusha, Tanzania is spending five weeks in England visiting schools and colleges. The main purpose of their visit is to raise funds for a secondary school in Tanzania. Secondary education begins at the age of 14 and is available only to those who pass the examination. For many, therefore, education ends at the age of 14, restricting their choices and giving rise to a number of social problems - prostitution and crime. Money to provide schooling for more children is therefore crucial.

In assembly the Band gave a memorable performance of their traditional, African music, playing on their drums and singing and dancing. More than this they gave us a glimpse into a different culture and language. This was followed by visits to a number of classes who were able to find out more about life in Tanzania and enjoy further examples of their music. Particularly exciting was the music and dancing of the Masai tribe.

We very much appreciated this visit which brought Africa with its richness of culture and acute problems so much closer to us. The friendliness and humour of the Band, which was in itself for many of us, a humbling experience contributed enormously to the success of the visit.
