She is a hidden character that you need to find during the game, but it's not mandatory to have her in your group to finish the game. You can find her by fighting in forests, and saying certain dialog to get her in your party. When you approach her home town, she steals your materia and disappears. She turns up in her town and you have to go around town uncovering her in different hiding spots. After a little plot with the Turks, she permanently joins your party.
