Post-Realization Description:
One night is in theme and variation form. The theme and its two variations are approximately the same length, to give the sections continuity. The original motives are stated in the theme and then developed in the following variation. The motives in each of the layers are derived from the situation depicted by each of the layers. The background layer is a couple having an argument over a departing train, the midground layer is a student returning home from a late celebration, and the foreground is an interpretation of rising annoyance in a person trying to sleep despite these distractions.
