Lesson: English
Class: Prep-A
Time: 90 min
Unit: Unit-7 Need / Needn’t
Goals: Understandind the use of need / needn’t
Objectives: To learn the use of need / needn’t, to discriminate the modal and the verb forms of need
Level: Beginners
Materials: Textbook, board, pictures,real objects,students themselves(for roleplay)

Pre-Teaching(10 min)
First i enter the class and greet my dear students with a big smile and ask how they are, what they have done during the weekend.
Then, i ask how the wheather is like,if it is rainy i take out a sunglass from my inner pocket, if it is sunny an umbrella.assume that it is rainny and i wore my sunglasses; probably they will ask why i wore them, then i act as if i ve just realised and say’Yes, you are right! It is rany, i needn’t wear sunglasses but i wore.’then i ll write the real part on the board and make them repeat it.
Ý also can involve them after some examples. For e.g. i can give a horrible wig to a student and then say ‘You needn’t change your hairstyle’ with a sour face and make the other students repeat it, but not as if repeating, as if directly saying it to that student.then i can go on with more examples.

While-Teaching
ACTIVITY 1(15 Min.)
I can show some pictures. For e.g. I can show a sad woman with her dead plant, her neighbour says ‘you needn’t water your plant everyday.’ But she did i can go on. (this is a pre information for the difference of needn’t and didn’t need to)
Then i write the main sentence on the board and underline the important parts.
I can show them many more pictures
I also will want them write it on the board so that i can correct it in the beginning and usually students like it when they can say it correctly.

ACTIVITY 2 (10 Mins)
My second aim is to teach them ‘didn’t need to’.In order to make them understand i give the same examples but in a different way.
For e.g. i can wear the same sunglass again, then i say ‘it is rainy’ and they will say after those exercises ‘you needn’t wear sunglasses’ then i ll say ‘but i wore’.then i will take off my glasses and i will say ‘it is rainy, i didn’t need to wear my sunglasses and i didnt.’
so they will be able to understand the difference.
I will repeat the same procedure with the other examples i had given.

POST-TEACHING ACTIVITY (10 Mins)
I will distribute a handout including a paragraph where needn’t or didn’t need to’ is used.I ll want the students focus on these sentences and what they mean. I can ask questions , we can talk about the paragraph for the last minutes of the first lesson.
---------------------------15 MINUTES BREAK-------------------------------------
ACTIVITY 1 ( 10 Mins)
At the beginning of the lesson, i give ten minutes to all students and want them create some situations and use ‘needn’t or didn’t need to’.
ACTIVITY 2 ( 15 Mins)
In the next minutes i give the place to my students for their presentation. This activity will be very enjoyable and at the same time i will be able to correct them immediately.More than writing students like watching, so they wont be able to forget if they both watch and hear at the same time.
ACTIVITY 3 ( 15 Mins)
After that,i can pass to the written exercises.I give then exercise sheets where the circumstances are given and what should be said is asked.
For e.g.
-Q-Your friend has bought a very expensive present for you.what do you say?
-A-You needn’t buy such an expensive thing
-Q-Your friend wants to buy a present for his boyfriend but she doesnt have so much money. What do you say?
-A-You dont need to buy an expensive present.
More examples like that will help them discriminate the modal and verb ‘need’.

Post Teaching ( 5 Mins)
I again read an interesting text where ‘needn’t or didn’t need to’ is used but this time i dont distribute the photocopies.I only read it as they will be tired.I just consolidate what they have learnt.
