| Submitted by Ulku Mekikci LESSON:English CLASS:1 TIME:90 minutes UNIT:22-If clauses type 3:unreal conditions(past time reference) LEVEL:Intermediate MATERIAL:Picture, board GOAL:Teaching the use of type 3 conditionals OBJECTIVE:To be able to use type 3,express different situations and make sentences with type 3 by the end of the lesson. PRE-TEACHING Before entering the class I will summon up my courage in order not to create a negative atmosphere and not to be in a negative mood.before moving in to the subject,I'ıı start with daily talks.Loudly-to wake them up-I will say"How enerjetic you're today...Oh!you really like a bomb...But I'm not...So they'ıı probably wonder the reason. And I'II answer with asking a topic sentence as an introduction to subject, like: *Is there anything in your life that you couldn't do although you wanted too much?Or you did but regretted? *there might be times you're so sad because of doing something/not doing something.. Is it true for you? After asking these questions,I will continue:"I'm not, because I've experienced these situations I've just mentioned.Forinstance, yesterday morning I didn't see my friend passed me in the street. If I had seen him ,I would have said hello..And last week,I didn't know that the school manager was ill...If I had known that he was ill,I would have gone to see him".and I will continue; "because of not doing things in the past,I'm not so happy now.It is the reason why I'm sory today..."By this way, most of the students will agree with me and willingly share their similiar experiences with me...as a result,a short conversation can be a preparation to start with the new subject. WHILE-TEACHING (35 minutes) FIRST LESSON FIRST ACTIVITY: Before the lesson, I prepared some pictures related with the subject. They are ideal to attract attention and colourful. I will hang the first picture; there is a boy. He's unhappy and thinking. Therefore, I only want them to look the picture carefully and make them use their imagination by the help of the lead-in questions, such as: § What do you see in this picture? § How does he feel? Why? § Is he smiling? § Why is he so unhappy? Does he thinking something? These questions will encourage students to interpret the picture, help them improve their imagination and creativity instead of giving the subject directly. SECOND ACTIVITY: I will say" Let's learn what he is thinking, and why he's so sad. Then I2ll show other five pictures one by one. One of them show : · He forgot Jane's birthday' · Second one' he's thirsty' · Third one" he got bad mark" · Fourth one "he is late for school" I will read each picture and they will repeat after me. When I turned the pictures: · "He gives a present to Jane · "He drinks water" · "He studies hard" · "He wakes up on time" So at last I will write that: · If he had given a present, he would have been happy · If he had drunk water, he would have been happy, · If had he studied hard, he would have been happy, · If he had woken up on time, he would have been happy THIRD ACTIVITY: I will want a volunteer and show one of the pictures again and want him to make a Sentences with IF related to the situation shown in the picture. SECOND LESSON: (45 Minutes) FIRST ACTIVITY: As a first activity I will create a short story: "Last week, I decided to go to Izmir by bus for my appointment. I was really late so, hurried up for the last bus. But I missed it. Then I learned that the bus I intended to catch crashed and everyone was killed. If I had caught it, I would have been killed. Then I call my friend Jack and asked for. He came with his son Tim. However, unfortunately, we crashed another car. Jack's son was badly injured. Lucky I was wearing a seat belt. If I hadn't wearing one, I would have been seriously injured. At the time of the accident I was sitting in the back of the car, because Jack's little boy was sitting beside him in front. If his little son had not been there, I would have been sitting in front. And probably, I would have been taken to the hospital. It was one of the worst days I've ever had. Because If I had had that appointment another time, I wouldn't have been so unlucky. It is about type 3 conditionals. I will use OHP to present it. First I'II only read it loudly SECOND ACTIVITY: I will deliver the story to the class. I will want them to underline sentences related to if clause type 3.After that, I will want them to help me write the sentences on the board that they found. They'll read and I will write. This time, to draw their attention, I will OHP and underline the sentences. THIRD ACTIVITY: This time by using sentences from the story, I will make a substation drill and I will also move into the negative form off type 3. I will do the first activity: T: I was wearing seatbelt so I wasn't injured. If I hadn't been wearing a seatbelt, I would have been seriously injured. Now, this time I will give the situation, write it on the board, to the students and they will do the exercise with if clause: T: The accident happened because he was driving carelessly. Ss: If he hadn't driven carelessly, the accident wouldn't have been happened. T: She didn't buy the coat, because she didn't have enough many. Ss: If she had had enough many, she would have bought the coat. T: I forgot your address so I couldn't send you a postcard. Ss: If I had remembered your address, I would have sent you a postcard. POST - TEACHING In this part, by reminding them some main points of the subject, I will have a chance to see if Ss get subject. Or I can learn how activities become helpful by reviewing the usage of the structure. At the and, I will ask students if there is any point that they confuse or can't understand. EVALUTION By the help of imaginative activities such as interpreting pictures, creating a story students find themselves in a learning process and perhaps have a little fun. |
