Disney World

DISNEY WORLD AND UNIVERSAL STUDIOS

Disney wrote the book on accessibility. Just about every attraction at both Disney World and Universal Studios (their competitor next door) is accessible For those who don't have a scooter, they may be rented near the front gate(s). These ECV's (Electric Convenience Vehicles) are very popular, and (as far as I know) are not reservable, so plan to get there early (usually before 10 AM). Keep in mind that some attractions do have some limitations regarding both health and the ability to transfer. Disney has a special booklet for those traveling with a wheelchair. It gives an overview on what is accessible and how to get to the "handicap loading area" for each attraction. Most of the time your entire party will be able to use these special entrances (though the booklet may say that only one person can accompany the disabled person) and my experience is that you will not have to wait the entire time for the "line to come to you", even though they may tell you that is the case. Disney is actually a group of theme parks with a monorail, busses, and boats connecting from one to another. ECV's rented at one park cannot be taken to another-there are usually but not always spare ECV's at each park. The same may also apply to manual wheelchairs available for rent. Your own equipment can (obviously) go from park to park- and all forms of transportation will accommodate them. The Disney resorts are also very accessible Busses with lifts will take you from the resorts to the front entrance. But reservations in advance (for the rooms) are necessary, and you must specify what accommodations you need. Make sure your conformation specifies any special accommodations you require. As far as I could determine, =all= the busses have the chair lifts. All the information provided herein is Copyright © 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 & 2001 Stuart L. Portner.
