After
being a part of a most disappointing cross country team in 1991, many members
of the varsity cross-country team did not know how to feel as the 1992 season
approached. The anticipation of a new season was exciting, but the shadow of
the prior season still lurked in the back of our minds. The outlook seemed to
brighten as positive words were spoken at the now annual season opening
Midnight Madness practice. During these speeches a challenge was issued: to
qualify for the state meet for the sixth year straight. The challenge was
accepted and another cross country season had begun. At first glance the
challenge seemed unheeded. The first few weeks of the season were slow and
local competition was staggering. As the season progressed we picked up the pace
and regained a little pride placing second at the District meet. We advanced
to the Regional meet where we faced the moment of truth. All we had worked
for came down to this race. Having completed the Regional meet our fate was
decided. Although we did not have a very good showing that day we took third
place and advanced to the state meet for the sixth year straight. We fared
well at state finishing seventh place in quite possibly the strongest team
race in the history of the meet. A goal was set out before us and we achieve
it. For six years straight St. X. qualified for the state meet. The cross
country program at St. Xavier has arrived. Hopefully it will stick around for
a while. |
