The 1993 Cross Country season began with high hopes and tremendous enthusiasm as nearly all the top runners put in hundreds of summer miles. Junior Chris Bollman led the team throughout the season and was the District champion. Surprising nearly everyone, sophomore Andy Schaeffer had a superb year and finished as District Runner-up. The senior class lacked a standout runner yet it formed the bed rock of the team. They say a team takes the shape of its senior leader. Well, our team had a lot of fun. Seniors Brian Miller, Adam Groth, and Steve Miller were constants in the top seven and had solid seasons. Senior Ryan Stoffer bounced back from "life-threatening" injury just in time to finish as the team's number two man at state, and help our bid for the National Title! All in all the season was a success. The team did not live up to every pre-season expectation, but then again, few teams do. We finished second in the G.C.L. behind an unusually strong LaSalle squad, won the District meet, and qualified for the State Championship for the seventh consecutive year. In the words of former coach Gil Wendling, "St. Xavier Cross Country has arrived!"
