Cincinnati Boys Cross Country Preview

St. Xavier's the early pick, but rivals are close behind

A quick look at the upcoming season:

Five team to watch (Big schools)

1. St. Xavier: The Bombers were expected to challenge for a state championship, but Tommy Balmat and Josh Walters are out indefinitely with stress fractures. The pressure will be on senior Dan Bird and juniors Randy King, Ricky King and Joe Keating.

2. La Salle: Paul Colardo, a fourth-year starter, is expected to lead a team that has been state runner-up the past three years and features seniors Kyle Dragan, William Keckeis and Andy Bittner, and junior Daniel Heister.

3. Middletown: Jeff See, one of the best junior runners in the country, will anchor a team that finished seventh at last year's state meet and includes seniors Michael Veatch, Evan Dehart, Adam Becker and Malcolm Tipton.

4. Moeller: The Crusaders return six of the seven runners who led them to a 14th-place finish at state. Junior Luke Beuerlein, their best state finisher (32nd), will lead seniors Sam Sharp, Matt Hook, Brad Babiak and Danny Frost.

5. Elder: The Panthers lost five seniors to graduation but return Mitch Frey, a state qualifier as an individual last year. He will be joined by Alan Eccard, Mike Galvin, Tony Bianco and Philip Threm.

Five teams to watch (Smaller schools)

1. Wyoming: The Cowboys return five starters from a 2002 team that was 10th at state. Junior Harold Jones, Wyoming's top state finisher in 2002, is back, along with seniors Ian Smith, Lucas Nebert, Jeff Howell and Eric Reckman.

2. McNicholas: The Rockets competed in Division I last year and will rely on standout Kevin Hackett, along with returning starters Jared Bickel, Steven Gammeter, Dustin Edwards and Alex Petre.

3. New Richmond: Randy Williams will anchor a young but talented team.

4. Badin: Sophomore Robert Lakes will lead the way, along with seniors Alex Pauley and Matt Leuthold.

5. Taylor: Mark Miller, who was 21st at state, will lead a squad that returns Joe McCarthur, Kyle Crofford and Paul Sullivan from last season's Division II district winner.

Top talents

1. Jeff See, Middletown: He is a heavy favorite to win the individual state championship.

2. Michael Veatch, Middletown: A senior, he finished less than one second behind See at last year's state meet.

3. Tommy Balmat, St. Xavier: If this senior, who finished less than one second behind See and Veatch at state last year, recovers from a stress fracture, he could challenge them.

4. Steve Schwartz, Lakota East: One of the biggest surprises at the state meet (20th), the senior is vastly improved.

5. Josh Walters, St. Xavier: Recently diagnosed with a stress fracture, he might have a tough time equaling last year's 22nd-place finish at the state meet.

6. Mark Miller, Taylor: He was 22nd at last year's state meet.
