Scooter Blennies: Neosynchiropus ocellatus

These very popular fish are actually not blennies. They are Dragonets. Some other popular (and also misnamed) members of this family are the Mandarin and Psychedelic gobies. Scooter Blennies are interesting, peaceful bottom dwellers and are found throughout the Indo-Pacific. They reach an adult size of 2.5" to 3", although jumbo-sized (4") Scooters are sometimes found. They are good tank mates for all fish and invertebrates. Males are easily identified by their large dorsal fin which they will display mainly when courting and in anticipation of battle. When two males meet, they will often lock lips and fiercely shake each other. Despite this behavior, it is possible to keep these fish in small groups. In the wild, their preferred foods are copepods, amphipods and other small crustaceans. In captivity, they will accept frozen foods such as Formula One. When kept in a fish only aquarium, they should be offered live foods such as brine shrimp until they are completely converted to prepared foods. While they can occasionally be seen sifting through the sand in search of small crustaceans, they would not classified as a 'sand sifter'
