DEER HUNTING STORIES 2000 pg 2of 5 |
Nov. 10-12, 2000 Hi folks, Well I wish I had some good news to tell you all, but this past weekend was a bust. I went down in Hocking Fri. eve thru Sun. eve and only saw the same spike and forkhorn little bucks that were entertaining me last week. Besides hearing and seeing turkeys everywhere the only unusual siting was a doe that came running all out down one of the points. She came tearing down the hill and stopped at the creek bank. She was a huffin' and a puffin', her tongue was hanging out. She was about 30 yards away and I could hear her panting. I stood up in my stand hoping that there would be a buck on her trail! After 10-15 seconds she walks down in the creek. I figured that she was going to get a drink. But what does she do? She lays down in a little pool of water! She laid there for about 30 seconds before she gets up and runs under my stand and trots off down the holler. She never looked at her backtrail at all. Needless to say there was not a buck behind her :-( I guess she laid down in the creek to wash off her sent. The only other excitement was when another doe ran down one of the other points and went right by my stand. I again got into position expecting a buck to be in hot pursuit. I few minutes later I hear something running down the same trail. "Here he comes" I said to myself. "Showtime"! The sound on the trail was getting closer and closer. My heart was a pounding! Suddenly, but what what appears on the trail, but dogs!!! #@%&* Steve |
Nov. 13-14, 2000 Monday and Tuesday I hunted in my little spot in Green Co. Monday I only saw a little 5-6 point buck that passed 10 yards from my stand that I have set up on the East side of the property. I am about 20 feet up, which puts me above the honeysuckle that is all around me. The honeysuckle is still green. A deer could be up close before you even would know it was there. Tuesday, brrrrrr!!! The only deer I saw "all" day was a buck that ran out from behind the house as I was crossing the bean field going back to my stand after a quick lunch break. They are teasing me!!! Well I got to go. I am tired, and can barely type. I hope these stories make since! Steve >>>------> |
Nov. 15, 2000 Back out in Greene Co again today. This time there was a lot of action! Around 8:30 a nice 8-10 pointer shows up about 45-50 west of me. I grunt at him and he stops. He eventually starts to move to my left and angles closer. I have my bow ready and drawn. He cuts behind some trees and honeysuckle at about 30 yards. No shot. I grunt again and he stops, looks around and strolls away out to the pasture and gone. He was a good one!!! At 10:30 a small 6-8 pointer shows up at about the same place. I grunt at him and he comes in. I draw, but he goes the same way that the first one did. Again, no shot! But he does not go out into the pasture. I thought that he might have bed down in the corner of the woods about 40 yards from me. For 3 hours I grunt, rattle, throw my apple core that way etc., and I get no reaction. I gave up on him. About 1:45 I hear a little noise in that direction and it is him. He was there all the time! He feeds around behind me ( I think he ate my apple core) and goes back into the corner and disappears. At 3 :15, (yes I am still perched in that tree all this time!), I small 8 pointer comes out in front of me. And this time I grunt this one in. When he gets about 10 yards away I draw and shoot! The arrow deflects and hits him in the shoulder. He runs off, the arrow falls to the ground. He left with a sore shoulder, no worse for the wear. At this time the second buck shows up again. He comes to the spot to where the deer that I just shot was at and sniffs around. Just then another small buck shows up and they both stare at each other and walk off together. Go figure!!! Crazy day!!! What will tomorrow bring? >>>----------> |
