Film Review: ''Samudhiram''

1.5 / 4 STARS

DIRECTOR: K.S. RAVIKUMAR

ACTORS: SARATH KUMAR, MURALI, MANOJ

ACTRESSES: ABHIRAMI, SINDHU, MONAL, KAVERI

MUSIC DIRECTOR: SABESH-MURALI

STORYLINE:

Sarath Kumar, Murali, and Manoj, are brothers who would do anything for each other. (In the very beginning, this is proven by having Murali and Manoj willingly drink poison simply because their brother commands it). They also have a sister they're crazy about (Kaveri), but she has been married off into V. Natarajan's home, where they constantly torture him because of an old feud.

Sarath Kumar is married to Abhirami. Murali has a 'morai ponnu' in Sindhu, and Manoj is in love with Monal.

The entire plot shows the three brothers being tortured for the sake of their sister's happiness.

COMMENTS:

"Vaanathai Pola" started the happy family trend, but used too much overblown sentiment. "Aanandham" continued the trend with just the right amount of sentiment. And here comes "Samudhiram" to make the "Vaanathai Pola" sentiment seem tame.

K.S. Ravikumar can always be relied upon to use way too much sentiment. I can think of a dozen examples. And it is this sentiment that gives a sense of unreality to the proceedings, making the audience feel tortured instead of touched.

It's a boring family movie. That's about all there is to say about it.

NOTE ON THE MUSIC:

The only good song is "Alagaana Chinna Dhaevadhai." The rest are lyrically puerile, and musically mediocre.

RECOMMENDATION:

Skip it.
