Its cattle fair time again and Pushkar, a dreamy little village in
Rajasthan, India is bursting with vibrant colors and energy. People from
all over the world have started thronging to see one of India's finest
rural cultural events.
The event is normally a five-day annual affair. The rural folk from all
over Rajasthan come to Pushkar for Business and Pleasure. Should you be
looking to buy a bullock, horse or camel - this is the place to come to.
And the bargaining is itself worth traveling miles to see. The villagers
and the tribal population sell their home-made wares during the day
through the hundreds of roadside stalls. The traditional goods are not
only bought by fellow villagers, but by the wide eyed tourists who are
enchanted by the ingenuity and simple beauty of the traditional goods.
In the evenings, its party time and the air resonates with music from
exotic rural instruments, melodious music, folk drama and dance. The
villagers arrive in the millions in their most colorful garb and the
visual impact of the festivities is phenomenal. To add to the caveat,
camel, horse & donkey races - great crowd pullers in their
own right enthrall the onlookers.
Pushkar has other claims to fame too. It houses perhaps the only Brahma
temple in the world today. There's also a lake attributed to have
miraculously materialized when a lotus flower dropped from Lord
Brahma's hands into the valley. In the evenings, the worshippers light
lamps on little green leaves and let them drift on the lake. The sight of
the lamps on little patches of green in the darkness of the night is
awesome and make a believer of just everyone.
The event's popularity has resulted in creation of comfortable
accommodation and restaurant facilities in Pushkar. India's corporate
world (perhaps realizing the immense potential offered by this gathering
of a few million villagers) have started promoting the event extensively
adding yet another dimension
So its time for you, if you haven't been there, to pack your bags and
enjoy rural India at her very best.
