Sponge Candy

from one of Grandma Duncan's old recipe Books.

1 cup sugar
1 cup corn syrup
4 teaspoons baking soda

Combine sugar and corn syrup in saucepan.  Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.  Continue cooking without stirring, to hard crack stage (350 on candy thermometer) or until mixture separates into hard and brittle threads when tested in very cold water.  Remove from heat. quickly stir in baking soda; mix well.  Pour into lightly buttered shallow pan.  (9 x 13).  Cool.  Break into pieces.  Makes one pound.
