Description:
As far as my sub goes, I'm still working on it...it hasn't been in the water yet. My sub was designed (and the hull was built) by a guy named Thomas Taylor, near Dallas TX. He had a company called Taylor Commercial Submarine Co. Most of his experience was in wet, ambient pressure subs and this was his first try at a 1 atm dry sub. It's made out of FRP (fiberglass) and he rated it for 600 feet. I REALLY have my doubts that it could withstand those depths. He declared bankruptcy and went out of business before this sub was complete so I have no idea if he actually had a working version or not. I obtained the sub from the person Taylor was originally building it for. Taylor has not been cooperative in giving me information on completing it so I'm more or less on my own. The sub is bare on the inside, no instrumentation, seats, or controls. That's what I have to finish. The drive for the sub is from 3 trolling motors; one in the rear and one on each side. The ones on the side can be rotated horizontal or vertical. There are dive planes but no existing controls for them. I'm in the process of mounting the seats and battery boxes (I'm planning on using AGM deep cycle batteries to get around the hydrogen problem). There are two 160 cu ft bottles mounted on the sides - one for O2 and the other for compressed air for the ballast tanks of which there are 4 - front, back, left and right. Right now I'm planning on varying the thrust on the two side motors to steer the thing. I have all the regs, valves, plumbing, etc to complete the thing....just need the time!! ;-) UPDATE: I have sold this sub to a company who purchased all of Taylor Submarine's assets. I did not feel it was a viable design (certainly not to 600') and therefore could not see sinking more money into it. My current plan is to begin building a Kitteridge K-350 out of steel. More info on that type of sub can be found on the psubs.org webpage.
