What ails India?
by Subhajit Ghosh
The other day one of my friend, frustrated at our Indian system which
didn't provide him whatever befits his capability commented "Ours is
a hundred crore anarchy." Being a respectable man and someone whose
opinion I greatly value, I sat pondering over his statement the next
few days. The birth of this piece has taken place from those musings.
Frankly speaking, I am not an authority on politics. This can just be
considered as a view of a concerned citizen. I've outlined whatever I
feel is some of the grave problems that besets our country at this
juncture.
Foremost, I feel we should inculcate a feeling of oneness amongst
us. It will materialise when the laws would be the same for each
and every citizen. No two citizens of the country is treated
differently. Uniform civil code is mandatory to create a sense
of true Indianness.
Secondly, thrust should be on Education for all. High illiteracy
is the root cause for many of the problems that plague our country.
Once education spreads, there's bound to be all round development
in all areas. The present education system which hardly allows a
student to creatively explore his field needs to be changed. Memorising
the contents for examinations and obtaining good marks seems to have
become the only purpose of education these days.
Thirdly, reservation needs to be done away with once and for all.
Unfortunately with each passing year reservation seems to be on
the increase. Merit should only be the governing factor in choosing
a candidate for job/promotion. I was witness to many a student from
reserved categories who are admitted to prestigious colleges and
courses, and unable to meet the standards of the required course, and
eventually find themselves in a difficult situation. To uplift the
poorer/neglected sections, more schools can be opened, teachers can be
recruited to teach at these schools, education can be subsidised, but
reservation? Nah! There's hardly any point in producing more Doctors,
Engineers and other professionals at the cost of lowering the standards
of these respective high skill demanding jobs, something a student who
comes from a reserved category is most likely unable to achieve.
Fourthly, all the major Indian languages should be treated equally
and can be accorded a "National language" kind of status. Present
policy of promotion of our existing National language i.e Hindi
is perhaps resulting in inadequate promotion of other rich Indian
languages. Promotion of a commercial-Hindi-film-type-of-entertainment
-culture by the Govt. in the media is ppoisoning the atmosphere for
development of creative art. For instance, with programmes like
Kaun Banega Krorepati becoming popular and several similar such programmes
already in the pipeline, it's ushering an unhealthy trend. The most annoying
section in Kaun Banega Krorepati is the entertainment based questions,
which invariably revolve around Bollywood. And not on good Indian art, which
have brought the country acclaim at an International level. Recently, the
undesirable ban of Hindi films and entertainment in Manipur, or the massacre
of Hindi speaking businessmen in Assam by regional militant groups is
possibly an indication of the rising intolerance of some sections against
pro-Hindi group.
Corruption seems to be everywhere in our country. Strict enforcement of
laws and severe punishment for anyone found guilty in corrupt practices
can reduce the menace to some extent. A good value based education will
further help in removing corruption from our society.
Family planning and its implementation should be undertaken on a war
footing. Population explosion has to be controlled. The Govt. can also
announce special incentives for small families. Like in Denmark, where the
education of a child is free if he/she is the only offspring in the
family. This will certainly help in controlling the population, as people
will try to avail of such benefits.
Also Politicans who are responsible for the welfare of the common man
should possess some basic education. If the leader himself is an
oaf, one can imagine where he's going to lead his subjects? This is
absolutely imperative for a country such as ours, where politicians
with criminal records or having no education at all are controlling
us most often with disastrous results.
Proper equitable development of all regions of this nation should be
ensured. This will ease the migration of skilled workers from their region
to other regions where the grass seems to be greener. For example, most of
our software companies seems to be located in Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Certain factors conducive towards an industry growing in a certain
region must unquestionably be better in these places, but there ain't any
reason why certain other Indian cities can't become the hub of
Industrial/Software activity too.
Above all, Education should stress on all round development -- mental,
health and spiritual aspects. Sports and games should be encouraged, as
well as other creative arts. It would help inculcate a sense of
responsibility amongst us caring for our environment etc.
Thanks for reading. Jai Hind!
