14 Indian workers dismissed over strike in
Mauritius
Port-Louis, Mauritius, 06/11 -
Fourteen Indian workers in an Indian-owned textile manufacturing
company in Mauritius, have had their appointments and resident
permits revoked following a six-day strike over their service
conditions, union sources said in Port-Louis Thursday.
A
Mauritian trade unionist, Reeaz Chuttoo, arrested on the same
charges, was later released, the sources said.
Chuttoo, a
member of the Federation of Progressive Unions (FPU), accused the
Mauritian police of resorting to violence in the arrest of the 14
Indians, who were working for Arvind Mills based in
Port-Louis.
"We have lodged a complaint since the beginning
of this strike at the International Labour Organisation (ILO). We
are also seeking the support of International Trade Union
Federations to alert other bodies on the situation of Indian workers
in Mauritius," he said.
For his part, Vikas Joshi, Director
of Human Resources at Arvind Mills, said the company was studying
the case of other Indian workers on strike.
The company
employs 263 Mauritians, 140 Indians and 37 Chinese.
