B & B
*ing: God, Abhishek, RM

Indian (Hindi) movies are made with different objectives

Some are made for the UP/Bihar audience

Some are made for the urban crowd

Some others are made for a big-time mass appeal (with item numbers thrown in)

Others are made, JLT, and these are movies where the protagonists enjoy acing in the movie more than the audience who spend a bomb to land up to watch the damned thing.

B&B is one of them. The director tried to hit the first three segments, but with such a disconnected, arbit storyline it fell into the 4th category.

Rani and Abhishek were sure having a good time. But the audience wasn't. Loud garish clothes, arbit out-of-place songs, and a storyline that the audiences will not buy in this age of connectivity...

Amitabh tried very hard to make this arbit pot-boiler run... With the red gamcha and hard core UPish language, it was difficult to follow what he was saying.

Kajrare is the high point of the movie.... Ash looks amazing and AB does the most amazing rustic dance step witnessed in Hindi movies.

Its time Bollywood stops making movies targeted at the so called "UP audiences". Its time they invested in a Market research firm that would throw up what the audience is looking for and not waste resources on trying to make Abhishek look like a kanpur ka unemployed ladka and Rani like a fighter beauty pageant contestant.

Designer kurtas/kurtis are all fine...

But where my friend is the story line?

Give it a miss if you haven't wasted your time on it already..... VJ (Sept 05)

SARKAR
*ing: God,God and Jesus

AB at his silent best.... What a performance.!

The best drama on screen. Would be tough choice between Black and Sarkar!

Amazing perfofmances. Supriya Pathak plays the don's wife and Kay Kay and Jesus play the sons of the don.

Set in Bombay, he movie shows the other side of a man who made it big by not accepting the "system" and doing what he thinks is right in the interest of the people who approach him.

Kay Kay plays the disgruntled son to perfection while Abhishek moves from a suave US returned to a budding Don.

A move that draws inspiration from The Godfather.... a situation where the original would be proud of its remake.... if one can call it that.

In a parallel world driven by its ethics and values, AB does it again. He holds the crowd by a moving his fingers, and in most of the scene his eyes do the talking,

The high-point of the movie: :"Ab?"

Watch it.... This is the first DVD I have invested in. The cover of the DVD has Sarkar giving the most amazing look. Can't make out whats happening on the small screen because most of the scenes are taken in a room where 60% of the screen is dark.

0 songs, amazing screen play. Watch it on big screen..... VJ

Lakshya
*ing: God, Hritik, PZ

AB at the helm, directing the war against the Pakis.... what can go wrong!

One will see a lot of young men enrolling for the Army this year.... especially the Mian Aisa Kyon Hoon variety.

With a Kargil backdrop, a gruesome reminder of the Pakis ways of back stabbing, the movie transits from the Delhi Yuppie life to the cold climes of Kargil and the blood and the gore.

Hritik look as patriotic as Manoj Kumar managed to look in Pukaar. PZ is the cool Delhi girl who lives with a mission and manages to move her career into journalism and lands up at Kargil.

Good songs: Main Aisa Kyon Hoon, Agar Main Kahoon....

AB does his bit and excels at it. As the General who has to capture point 5019 (or some other sort number) he manages to motivate his team to go for the Kill.

The villains are the scheming Pakis. Reference to the Pakis not coming to pick up their dead, how they were pushing the militants  would make any Indians blood boil (breathes there a man with soul so dead!)

Worth a watch. HR is good (though he is a brand ambassador for the Reds), and the scenes at IMA, rock climbing would make any arm chair trekker sit up. ...

Watch it on big screen..... VJ

Dev
*ing: God, Om Puri
Its a Classic. AB v/s the system, and the system wins. Values v/s call of the duty v/s IPS v/s the politician v/s family needs v/s the corrupt system.

Too heavy for a person who is paying 150 buck for entertainment. But a classic, nevertheless.

AB, an ageing IPS handling sensitive areas. Faces riots, watches death from close quarters, but has somehow managed to keep his integrity and values in place. Has a friend, Om Puri, another IPS who, understandably, is driven around by the political forces. Amazing screne play, strong dialogues, and AB manages to get his dilemmas across to the audience.

Rati Agnihotri, the mature wife of AB does her supporting bit. Kareena and Khan are the couple trapped in the religion based politics. Kareena has shown her talent, no arbit smiles and song & dance. Could be nominated for Best Actress.

Its like watching a documentary on the Gujarat riots. Govind Nihlani has researched the subject well. The balance of the religion issues has been maintained, otherwise this one would be banned by the Shiv Sena in a couple of days.

Its a great movie, helps you realize that one needs to do his job well with full integrity and dedication, and "aadmi ki maout to us din ho jatoi hain jis din woh apne farz se moh moide deta hain".... a good one, can be used by HR Managers.

Another amazing scene: OM Puri advising God: "Jab toofan aate hain, to jo ped jhuk jaate hain woh bach jaate hain, aur jo akad ke khade rehte hain woh ud jate jain"..... AB looks down, glass of Glenfiddich, and says "Tum Bach Jaaoge"..... Wooah! Put feet!

Watch it ....VJ

Hum Tum
*ing: SAK, Rani
SAK gets a step closed to the top notch. Rani is already there.

A cool for-the-young at heart movie. Harry ko mili Sally. Drives through Paris, NY and London.

Cartoonist Karan Kapoor, (SAK) meets Rani in some flight. Connecting flight is delayed, spend time together. Karan is a care free guy, and Rani is soon to be married. Cool Boy-Girl fights, decent songs and dance sequences. Karan is obviously in love with Rani (who wouldn't be). However she is married off, happily to AB Junior. AB does his mature bit. Life goes on.

Couple of years later, paths cross. Bubbly Rani is like a flat Pepsi (since flat or bubbly Coke tastes equally bad!), Karanbhai is still in his 18-till-i-die mode. He does all that is required to get her back into the enthu mode. Pairing up with a friend, leading to complications etc.

SAK handles the funny scenes well. "Tom Cruise Style", and other things will catch on the metros. Rani plays her  woman-in-control bit.

Kiron Kher plays the punj mom of Rani. Rishi Kapoor is an artist who wants to purse his vagabond life, SAKs dad.  Rati A, doing her emotional bit.

The move swings from US, UK to Chattarpur Farms.

Its a new age movie, will be liked by the urban college crowd. Director has inserted some cartoon during cut-to shots, decent change. Worth spending 150 buck on....VJ

Main Hoon Na
*ing: SRK, Khan, Sushmita Sen, Satish Shah
Masala Movie No 1. SRK doing the matrix on Spit Fire, young enthu school people, Indo-Pak Relation, a Commando gone crazy and SRK hamming away till the end. The 1970's dress sense of SRK (willing to admit that he is an Uncle!), Sushy sashaying away in pastel color sarees add to the flavour of this maha masala movie.  A good clean Family movie....

Me not a great SRK fan after his prevoious hamming clip- KHNH. Amrita Rao is cool in her school girl role, though we missed her out in Masti totally. Good songs and wild un-watchable comedy by Satish Shah. He spits away to glory and its best not to watch this movie after a full meal. At PVR they were offering Barf bags along with tickets!

Overall its looks like the directors and the script writer have merged various scripts and thoughts they had planned for the next 10 movies and made this cut-to kind of movie instead.
A decent made-for-the family movie. Worth a watch if you take SRK for 3.5 hours....VJ

MASTI
*ing: Vivek O, Aftab S, one more guy and three arbit girls
Hindi slapstick double meaning, funny movie. Good part is that it is well made and fast paced and it is really funny. About three married guys who deiced that they have had  enough "ghar ki daal" and now want some "bahar ki biryaani". So they decide to go on an (individual) woman hunt. Quite a simple concept, but some wild scenes on gays, good dialogues and very down to earth discussion that would make one laugh.
Watch it with you GF/BF/GFs/BFs/friends/spouse. Avoid taking kids who would be soon in a position to explain you the second meaning of the dialogue. Parents, well u would take them along, if you can laugh together on triple meaning jokes.
The girls have really pulled the movie down. Must be director and camera man's daughters or something. Just one nice dance step, otherwise dabba gol. Arbit songs, unnecessary emotion at time and Vivek O looks like a chappu in his new hair style. Ash should watch it.
Must watch if you are married or wanna have a good time (both are mutually exclusive events ;-).. main nahin bolta, its a philum ka dialouge.). Not even 3% close to DCH.... BTH: -VJ

Murder
*ing: Ms Sherewat
Well, its a good family move. Must watch with parents and close family members in a cinema hall. Its give a lot of tips on how to go about starting a family.
Wooah, one of the boldest Hindi movie I have ever seen. Quite a few interesting scenes and Ms S sizzles the screen. Male actors actually get paid for doing those scenes?
Story, what story. Woman meet lost love. Woman is "lonely" housewife... aur Jasbaad mein aa kar, she has a fling with her obsessed ex-bf. Things go for a toss. Some arbit songs interspersed, no great performances. Wonder why it was named Murder? Could have been called "Woh Akeli Ladki" or other some sleazy name like "Shaadi Shuda Kunwaari"...!
Moral of the story: Gotta have fling to realize the importance of marriage
Moral 2: Its always the guys fault, so kill him. -VJ

Ek Hasina Thi
*ing: Urmila and SAK
A RGV movie and lives up to the expectations. Fast paced and difference concept makes it watch able. With scenes out of If Tomorrow Comes and perhaps the first exhibition of a ladies jail, the movie has its moments of revelation.
Urmila does here i-am-pshyced-out-and-i-will-fight-back bit again. She is good at it. SAK continues his me-the dude image he has managed to conjure after DCH. No time wasted in senti numbers, the moves winds through the world of havala and havalat and all in between.
RGV does his bit by introducing non-glamorous characters in between (like Abhijit!) who just shake up just when u are expecting a another normal scene.
Like any other decent moved "ek baar dekhne layak hain".
Fits well into the RGV genre of movies: Darna Mana Hain, Road, Kaun. Coming up next: Ab Tak 56. -VJ

Khakee:
*ring: AB, AK, and a lot of other junta
A Cop story with a difference. No Superman, no matrix-style bullet avoidance, just a normal police man who is edging towards retirement. AB has played his age, and overshadowed the youngsters who have tried to play theirs. Ms. Rai adds the effervescence to the flow. No wastage of film, this movie gives another aspect of our society, the unspoken realities.
The usual unconnected song to movie sequences. In the most twist-in-the-tale stages the romantic couple take off for some Spanish dance sessions. Aisa-jado-dalare is quite an amazing song. Its the song that can be played 6 times on a wet-night!
A watch able fare. will keep you gripped onto your seat for the 2.5 hours. Over 6000+ bullets fired in the movie, and a lot of ketchup used on all the stars, this one is not for the weak hearted. - VJ

Munnabhai MBBS:
*ring: Sanjubaba and a lot of other junta
A well made funny "bhai" move. Inspired by Patch Adams (very loosely). The story of a Mumbai ka bhai who decides to do MBBS. In the role he does best, the tapori ones, Sanjubaba has done a good job. Good script and dialogues, the comedy with a message has been liked by all age groups. With the leading lady (name I forget, the one in Lagaan) does her bit of dancing around. Sunil Dutt is the hero's pop, could have been replaced by Anupam Kher.
Take a break from life, see the other side of hospital life and enjoy this movie. Has the "feel good factor" at the end of it. Maybe it will rub off a little on the BJP raths. - VJ

  *****************************************************************************************

Plan:
*ring: Sanjubaba and a lot of other junta
Now this one was quite a surprise package. We went to watch it bcoz of lack of anything better to do and enjoyed the fare. The movie is well  paced, no arbit heroines singing unnecessary songs. The story is about four guys who are heading to Bombay to make a fortune. the i-wanna-get-rich-quick plan goes for a toss and now they head the wrong way to make money. A good movie to watch on a relaxed Sunday. Sanjubaba plays the don, looks old and plays his age. Priyanka Chopra tries the dance-bar girl bit and fails miserably. The songs are good and another wet-night types is "Pyar aaya pyar aaya".  Dino Morea is too stiff but the other guys are more natural and balance it out.
Don't bother going to the theatre, just get a VCD - VJ

Kal Ho Na Ho:
* SRK, SAK, PZ, Jaya B
Its good that SRK clarified that its not a remake of Anand, bcoz if it is one, its really a bad one. PZ looks good, trendy NY babe with her own set of problems. For no rhyme-or-reason she falls in love with SRK (who looks 40 with his big red face). SRK dances around her house and lo she is in awe of him.

SAK lives up to his DCH image, cool, un assuming, the man with his flaws, and so he deserved the Filmfare Award this time. The story line is pretty weak, gives a good view of NY. But the arbit roles of JB, her MIL and Dara Singh were un-necessary.

Songs are good. Title song is good, Sonu Nigam, good work (if you are reading this). Its the time to Disco is so very trendy, and in  Mahie Ve  you can see the typical SRK dance steps.
Quite a lot of hype, did not live up to the expectations. thank god SRK did not get best actor for this one. -VJ

Baghban:
* AB, HM and other arbit junta
Holi Khele Raghubira, Chali Chali and the amazing Main Yahaan to Wahaan are the songs that AB has passed on for the next generation. Each song being a piece of art, will fit into Holi, Valentines day and sad moments (don't call your GF on ISD/STD, just send her the CD) respectively. AB does his class act again, its pretty much like his life story where the phoenix rises from the ashes. Unlike Avtaar, this time the kids are not pardoned.

SK tries to do the Sachin (Avtaar) act. No blood donation to buy tools, but actually a manager for Ford in Coimbatore! No "will help AB fight back", but will sing bajans with Mahima auntie. Thank god they mention "Salman Khan in a very special role" in the beginning.
Movie not recommended for people above 48, and absolutely banned for ones nearing retirement (55 plus). A must see for HM fans, she glows on the screen and overshadows the city-bahus.

Amitabh cracks it in Chali Chali. what an amazing dance sequence. there a moments you think that a man his age would slip a disc or two, but AB carries it off (like Banda yeh Bindaas, Aks). ICICI has really put fight and AB has done his bit for the bank. All that AB has to say is "tum log apna account yeh heech bank me kholne ka, keh diya na,  bus keh diya" and you will see queues outside ICICI... connect to BFAXI page....

A modern Avtaar (which still stands as a classic) AB has done his bit. The songs leave a stronger image than the performances.
Watch it at at the theatre, don't take your parents along.- VJ

Kucch Na Kaho
* AR, AB and other arbit junta
The title says it all. I wonder why such movies are ever made? Run on the mill. Good shots of Mauritius. Ash looks good. Maine Aaj Tumko Jo Dekha is a cool tune.
No use wasting cyber space on this one- VJ

LoC:
* Everyone except AB, Suneil Sheety and Sunny Deol (or were they there?) Wooah, it looked like a 4 hour review of the Filmfare awards. A good refresher on what happened at Kargil and why were in a tight spot. But our friend could have made the move much shorter. Cut out the scenes where each guy remembers his woman back home, how each guy recollects how he left home, how each guy call up home and how each guy..... whatever. Decent bhaiyya performance by Manoj Bajpai, but I think he deserved the award for Pinjar and not LoC.

JP Dutta directed and edited the movie. We all know what we write in our self appraisal and imagine rating ourselves on it! Bugger could not cut off the extra scenes and we have to sit through 4 hours of blood and gore. The move runs into 3 VCDs.

Songs are not good. Border had raised the bar.

Move gives a lot of gyan on Army terms. Jat regiment, Arties, how planning is done etc, but the 4 hour movie takes its toll. It was like watching Titanic where if the director had not sunk the ship I would have! -VJ

Finding Nemo
Hey, like cartoons, watch this one. Its really a great movie. After the movie is over  the sea and the creatures seem so human. Amazing animation and true Walt Disney style (now lets forget what the Board Members are busy doing) family movie.

Buy the VCD, can add to you Lion King, Alladin, and Hercules collection- VJ

******************************************************************************************

Erin Bronkovich
Yup, I know its an old movie, but give an interesting side of life. Julia Roberts did deserve the award for that one. a good movie to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Will make you get up from your seat and u would wish to do your bit to change the world. Hey, attacking corporates is the easiest thing to do, but this movie has handled it sensitively.

Watch Julia R in action ,looks good and acts better- VJ

About Schmidt
The English Baaghban. Depressing movie. Jack Nicholson plays his role well.. No Chali-Chali kida stuff, but an old man who is looking for something to do in his old age. gives a cut-into the life of the old and lonely. Pretty depressing sight. So if you are close to retirement don't pick it up + let this movie be banned for people above 55....

It has its moments, would be the Oscar types, avoidable, watch Baaghban instead.- VJ

******************************************************************************************

A Few Good Men
Old film, amazing performances. Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson seize the enter stage. Its like a 3 hour JAG episode. Gives an insight into the way the forces work, the ups and downs and how power corrupts. Jack N has a good role. He sticks to his point. the move is pretty balanced and at the end of it one is not in a position to take sides (TC or JN) and both are correct in their own way.

Great performances, try implementing Code Red in your workplace-VJ

******************************************************************************************

Lost in Translation
No great shakes. Ageing star, away from family, on assignment to Japan. Midlife crisis, meets this girl who is getting bored in life. They become good friends, discussing life et. al. they have fun together and go their respective ways. Another, makes-one-think, type of movie.

A decent move to watch when u have nothing better to do. -VJ

RADIO
What a movie, da. A true story, and one of the best movie I have seen (in my current spate). Mr Cuba Jr is just amazing and Ed Harris is great too. About an small time town, football and the human spirit... No English remake of Koi Mil Gaya, but an amazing film. just watch it and tell me what you think about it.

A family movie, Mr Cuba something Jr has given a great performance. -VJ

Disaster.com. Why would anyone make a movie like that? Why would anyone invest in a project with weird mix of emotions and robots and absolutely crazy ending

******************************************************************************************

Untouchables
Nothing to do with Harijans or the poverty in India. This holly wood flick has Sean Connery, Robert de Niro, Kevin Costner all in the same movie. Based on the prohibition in the USA during the 1930s and the rise of the Mafia and how one guy in a special cell forms a team to catch the violators.

Amazing sets, 1930s Chicago, and decent dialogues and good scenes. Watch it. -VJ

******************************************************************************************

IRIS
Nice to watch, has Kate Winslet and . About a famous writer who discovers that she is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. Very sensitively handled and the movie moves back and forth (present and flash back). Gives you an insight into old age and its fights. A supportive husband and how he goes about helping her out gives it a nice touch.

Fortunately not another Baagban. A BBC movie, watch it when you are alone and if you like slow movies with a meaning. -VJ

******************************************************************************************

Maverick
A classic, we actually bought the VCD. Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster. Based in the wild west, horses, bank robbers, total chaos et. al.  About this guy who needs to collect cash he has lent to people so that he can compete the biggest poker game in Amreeka. Meets this con woman and the get along famously. Twists and turns and all that that happens when he battles to make his entry fee money. It gets more interesting once he gets his money and the game begins.

Good one, watch it with family. Guess this movie would have won some academy awards for the good sets and wardrobe. -VJ

******************************************************************************************

Dead Poets Society
Carpe Diem, and Robin Williams, get along well. about a maverick school teacher who wants his students look beyond the rules and do-their-own-thing. The alumni who comes back as a teacher, and tries to get some students interested in poetry. Set in the 50s, the stiff rules of school v/s the group who wants to take the road less traveled.

Good one. Obviously not an action movie, but makes you wish you had a teacher like that we would have been different people.  -VJ

******************************************************************************************

One Hour Photo
Robin Williams again. but this time is a (supposed to be) horror story. This movie will be out dated in a couple of years with the advent of digital cameras. About a loner who starts thinking that he is part of a family bcoz he has been seeing their photos for over a decade. Good concept, but the film is very slow and predictable. Gives an insight on how loneliness can drive a guy crazy.

Its a crazy world out there. Swati believes that cities (Bombay especially) are full of weirdoes (thanks to Ram Gopal Verma).... and this one just proves it again that u can't trust the guy next door. -VJ

******************************************************************************************

Head of State
A very arbit but funny movie. About this guy off the street who runs for president. Like tapori Govinda becoming an MP (anything goes!). Since the protagonist is black, some of the NY street dialogues are very difficult to comprehend, but the movie is worth watching. Mockery of the Amreekan election system and how mud slinging plays a key role.

Not sure if you will the DVD/VCD in a local store. A good relaxed movie that would make one laugh. Take it only if the DVD rental is below 50 bucks.... and u have nothing better to watch -VJ

Jhankaar Beats
A ode to RD Burman, the Boss. Three dues, in various stages of life, one going to be a dad, other on the verge of a divorce and third looking for a partner. BOnding factor, The Boss.

They have a band and want to win the annual Jhankaar Beats award. Fast paced, good songs and good cast. Movie revolves around these three couples and the common aim the men have.

Tu Mohabbat, Tu Asshiqui Hain, is catchy and well choreographed. Juhi looks as good as ever.

Another of the new age movies. More down to earth cast, realistic situations. Watchable. -VJ
