The best time to plant most vegetables is after the threat of frost is over.
For most of the country Mothers Day marks the last frost date of the year.
After May 14th, vegetables like Tomatoes, Zucchini, String Beans, Peppers and
Cucumbers can then be planted safely. All these plants can be purchased all ready
started at your local nursery. All you have to do is dig a hole, pop the plant out
of its container and pack it gently into hole. Water it in and your done.
That's the simplest way to get started. If you want higher yealds from your
plants you can add soil amendments. By mixing into the hole one or all of the
following before you plant your vegetables, you can help enrich the soil: Peatmoss,
Compost and Cowmanure. If you hate weeding as much as
we do you can use plastic weed barriers. These are 3' x 9' strips of plastic that
you can cut down to size and placed on the ground. They are held in place by plastic
spikes. When you want to plant your vegetables you simply cut an X into the plastic
were you want the plant to go. Then dig a hole, plop the plant into the hole and fold the
plastic back into place. These sheets are perforated to let water through but
keep the weeds out! You can also keep out the weeds by using mulch, such as small
sized wood chips, shredded leaves or even grass clippings. Then at the end of the
season you can turn in the old mulch for even richer soil next year! |
