Just as the weather starts getting warmer the catalog
companies send out all their plants. If your front door step is is anything like
ours, you'll be tripping over boxes from all the orders that were placed in February
(sheesh! What was I thinking!?). I blame it on cabin fever, but now I have to
get them all in the ground. Remember when buying plants if you buy one of one
variety that's fine for a small garden but, in larger gardens one plant can get lost. to
make plants stand out try buying plants in lots of at least 3. For a more dramatic
effect plant them next to each other in groups. This way if one plant has a poor
year the other plants can fill in.
Well no time like the present for soil preparation. Break
out the shovel and the pitch fork.
The first thing to do is get a wheel barrel of compost from the
bin. You can also buy compost and peatmoss at you local nursery. If you don't
what to pay for it next year you will have to make it this year (for tips on composting please check back soon). When you dig a
hole to plant your flowers mix in the compost and peatmoss to inrich the soil. Add
you plant to the hole, firm in the soil around the roots, water it in and your done.
