This course is designed to enable students to begin to communicate in Gaelic. Students will develop a vocabulary of several hundred words. They will use simple language and read simple passages while exploring a variety of aspects of Celtic culture, social customs, history, geography, music, theatre, and the visual arts. Students will use both books and technological resources, such as the internet. |
Students will use both books and technological resources, such as the internet. Most Tuesdays (after class) there will be a Celtic " dinner and a movie" night. Most classes will include Celtic drink, Celtic food, and Celtic music. |

All classes, including the first, will include a component in the Gaelic language. Simple discussions, as much as possible, will be conducted primarily in the Gaelic language. Handouts of my websites which summarize the key phrases being used in class will be available. Although the advantage of the website is that you can actually hear the phrase properly pronounced by a native Gaelic speaker. |

The building on the left, dating from the 1890s, represented a huge step forward in architectural style. We well also benefit by a number of (Gaelic) guest speakers, who will speak on other topics of interest. |

Reading of the texts and other materials will be a critical component of the course. These should generate animated class discussions (mostly in the English language).
As with many peoples who have enduring much suffering, the Celtic people have an advanced sense of humour. Unfortunately it does not translate easily and requires some explanation. We will study such anecdotes to seek an understanding of their form of humour. |
