Goody Box

When out on the trails, what do you want to have with you? This depends largely on

  • your rig
  • where you are going
  • how big of a group you are out with (and how well prepared they are)

I consider the following:

A. Mandatory Equipment
   1. Good tow points front and rear
   2. Food and beverage (including lots of water)
   3. Adequate clothing for location and weather
   4. Roll bar for soft-tops, seatbelts for all occupants
B. Highly Recommended
   1. Flashlight
   2. First aid kit
   3. CB radio
C. Suggested
   1. Strap (snatch strap, tow strap, recovery tools)
   2. Pioneer tools (Axe, Shovel, Saw etc.)
   3. Tools (basic toolkit)

If you do go out on your own (not recommended, especially if you are new), make sure you are prepared for the worst, ie major extraction (winch?), spending the night (food, shelter), breakage (spare parts, tools) and most importantly FILE A FLIGHT PLAN. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back.

After you have been out wheeling a few times, you will get a much better idea of what to put into your goody box. Here are some ideas:

  • HighLift Jack, and 12x12 piece of plywood for a base in muddy/mushy conditions
  • Cell phone, CB, ham radio. Anything to communicate with.
  • Compass, map, GPS.
  • Gloves for handling winch cable, chains, hot metal etc.
  • Duct tape, bailing wire, zip ties.
  • Fix-A-Flat, WD-40
  • Water. A great cleaning agent.
  • Tarp, space blanket, sleeping bag. Makes spending the night much more pleasant to be dry and warm.
  • Winch, winch kit (D-rings, shackles, pulleys, tree saver, gloves)

After you know your rig a bit better, and have done more modifiying, you can add in some specific items that you may need. In addition you will discover weaknesses in your rig.

  • Spare axle shafts
  • Spare fan belt
  • Spare radiator hoses
  • Extra oil
  • Extra fuel
  • Spare ignition coil

Make this list as long (or short) as you feel comfortable (or have space).
