Rob Roy
Anton-
First of all, what's the full name?
Rob-
Robin Gilles Roy (laughs)
Anton-
How many years have you been skateboarding for?
Rob-
Ummm, I started in 1997, so I guess 5 or six seasons, but I only really got into when I moved closer to downtown, that's when I really started progressing.
Anton-
Who or what have been your major influences?
Rob-
I think what influences me the most is trying to impress people, as much as I like the feeling of landing a good trick, I like when people appreciate it as well, especially people who are better than me. Also, I've always wanted to be sponsored for some reason, just the skate lifestyle would be great, skate all day everyday, and get paid for that, that's intense.
Anton-
What is the key to your determination and dedication to skateboarding, in such a small place like Sudbury, with so little skate spots?
Rob-
I just want to have a chance to skate somewhere else, anywhere else, where there are more opportunities. I see the Sudbury skate scene as a miniature Cali, there's the notorious spots, and everyone knows what has been pulled there, so u try to do something that hasn't been done...pushing the limits. There's a lot of talent in Sudbury.
Anton-
Most definitely. Alot of that natural talent and style is on the D&R team...How did you go about making that company and team?
Rob-
Well, the "company" started as a project for a Tech class, and I just kept it going because Joel at Skadurz was willing to display them for me, which is huge exposure. The team was basically who I skate with and who I think really has skills, and loves to skate. Greg Triff just agreed to be on the team too so that is great, we got all the big players, haha.
And they don't really get anything special out of being on the team, it's just representation for me, they get stickers, and deals on rails if they want them...
Anton-
Do you get anything out of it...Do you make alot of profit off of the merchandise?
Rob-
Heck no, haha, last year I made quite a bit, but it supported my habits, I'd pick up my cash at Skadurz, and spend it at the same time. This year I think I only sold 6 rails, pretty sad (laughs). I'm still in debt with my Dad like 300$.
Anton-
Your D&R video, 'Misinformed' is soon to be released. Are you psyched for it?
Rob-Oh ya man, it's gonna be hype, I'm hoping to have a premier somewhere, there's a mad line-up, Teskey, Denis, Triff, Devin Sager the new comer, he's got mad skills, and Jon Knight throwing himself down things, and myself. If anyone knows where we could premier the vid, tell Anton or contact me. There's a hype friends' section this year too man, gonna be good.
Anton-
I m really looking forward to this video too, its going to be unlike anything Sudbury has ever seen or made. when is it due to be released?
Rob-
DEC1/03
Anton-
You carry this unique style with you when you are on a skateboard, and truly add to the definitions of flow and solidity. What's that all about?
Rob-
That's great to hear Anton, I dunno, at the beginning of this season I saw a "Digital" video with Mark Appleyard, and every single trick he does he lands perfectly and doesn't pivot out or anything, that's basically what I shoot for when I'm filming, or trying to do something that will feel good. Also, I think I understand how tricks are supposed to work, just from seeing so many mags and videos, I guess I study the trick, and what I have to do, my style has really progressed since last year, I'm liking that a lot, style is what makes a person good to watch.
Anton-
Definitely Rob, your a natural.
Rob-
Thanks man.
Anton-
Do you have anything else you d like to say or comment on..?
Rob-
Actually, I'm kind of getting upset at how teenagers are viewed in our downtown, everyone thinks we're bad just because of our age, it's not right, I was filming denis trying a trick at this ledge today, and I had a sweet angle from on top of this hut thing, and some guy comes outside out of nowhere and is like "GET THE HELL OFF THE ROOF" and I'm just like "I'm trying" and he just kept mouthing off at me, and he was smoking right at the door of this building with the door open, we informed him that he was breaking a By-Law, but he said to not worry about it, then I told him smoke was going in the building, and his response was, and I quote "So" to which I said, that's illegal. Then we left. It's horrible the way teenagers are viewed in Sudbury.
Anton-
Who is your favourite skateboarder?
Rob-
Mark Appleyard, John Rattray, Ted DeGros, Bastien Salabanzi, John Rattray has the best style in skateboarding right now in my opinion. Brian Anderson is also very solid
Anton-
What is your favourite trick?
Rob-
To watch - switch frontside big spins
To perform - Backside smiths, Back tails, and kickflip 50-50
Anton-
Skating at night or day?
Rob-
Day, its the easiest time to film.
Anton-
Pro model, or blank?
Rob-
Pro model, I had a blank, and it didn't motivate me, that's really weird.
Anton-
What tricks have you been focusing on landing lately?
Rob-
I want a kickflip back smith to end my part, it would have to be solid though, I'm really trying to learn frontside tailslides too, long ones. Oh ya, and frontside flips, haha hardest trick for me, I don't know why.
Anton-
Shout outs?
Rob-
Mom, Dad, Lia, Sophie, Olaf, Corey, Denis, Pierre, Joel the biker, Triff, Jon, Sag-money, "the fans", no that's bad.
Anton-
(laughs) Ok man, I think that's it then. Thanks for the interview, Robin Roy.
Rob-
(laughs) No problemo, Anton Tchajkov.
