Chapter 5

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Sakura could sense her friends' nervousness. She clutched her necklace that held the Clow key.

I must help them! Or else we'll all be lost... She shakingly reached for her pocket where she carried her Clow Cards with her. With her other hand, she got out her key and chanted her incantation softly. Syaoran swiftly turned as he sensed her power. He stood quietly gazing as Sakura took out her Light Card. "Light!' she cried.

In an instant, the cavern became blazed with dazzling light. Now the group could see exactly where they were. All the sounds that they had heard before were suddenly gone as if whoever or whatever had made them were suddenly afraid. Whatever was in the hole had suddenly stopped moving as well -- as if scared to go out into the light.

As the group looked around, they saw that they were in a humongous cavern with stalagatites and stalagamites hanging up and down. The top of the cave was several feet up and the room they were in was vast. They could see doors and openings to more and more rooms. What looked like a small cave on the outside turned out to seem almost infinite in size on the inside. It was an amazing sight and almost beautiful in its eternity.

Surprisingly there were no signs of life at all inside the cave -- at least none visible. The walls were bare gray rock and there was no sound that could be heard except for the light trickling of water far, far away in some distant room.

Sakura, Syaoran and Tomoyo turned their heads to the hole that laid before them and had given them so much dread. Indeed, there was a hole there, a tremendous black hole that even the Light Card could not shine into fully. It seemed to not be a part of the cave at all and it reached downwards into an endless basin. Sakura trembled and stepped away from the hole, fearful of falling in. A small pebble on the edge of the hole fell in. Sakura waited and listened intently but she could hear nothing.

While the Light card had definitely made the group feel a little better, they all still hadn't shaken off that feeling of forboding dread. What could be in that hole??

"Hmm..." mused the man. "Clever idea, isn't it? Not that it matters. This will be done without me trying. I'll just have to exert a little bit more force...It's time I had some more practise anyways. This will be a good way to prepare for that day."

His shoulders tensed and his eyebrows furrowed together in anger. "That day...oh how long I've waited for this to come! And now, before me, just within my grasp..."

The man settled back in his chair. Another thought had occured to him, a thought he really didn't want to think about.

Suddenly, as if in response to the question of the great pit, the ground began to shake. At first, it was only small tremors but they began to grow and grow in size. Pebbles from the ground began to fall into the great hole as the ground shook violently.

Sakura, Tomoyo, and Syaoran linked hands as they huddled together, crouching on the floor. Stalagatites began falling to the ground and shattering around them. It seemed as if the roof of the cave would collapse upon their heads. Sakura shuddered as she thought of stories that she had heard about people that died of suffocation inside caves such as these. Fearing the worst, she shakingly got to her knees and took out her staff again to try and stop the cave from inevitably falling apart onto their shoulders.

Sakura's timing could not have been more terrible. As soon as she had lifted her legs off the ground, the earth beneath her gave a violent lurch as if to purposely make her fall. She plunged forward on her knees -- straight into the black bottomless pit. Syaoran and Tomoyo screamed together "Sakura!!" as she fell in desperate panic. They jumped forward as if with one mind to follow Sakura into the hole but it disappeared suddenly and seemed to close up. The two instead fell face forward onto dust and rock.

Syaoran and Tomoyo looked around, dazed by the fall. They noticed all of a sudden that the earthquake had come to a halt. The cave was silent once again but now it had lost its beauty and was a total mess. All around them were broken fragments of rocks. The earthquake had stopped as quickly as it had started.

Was this all because Sakura had fallen into the hole? Tomoyo and Syaoran wondered. Was someone controlling this earthquake? Who could be so powerful...?

Syaoran pounded the floor where the hole had once stood in frutration. Sakura!!, he thought furiously. Why? Why you? Tell me where you are! He realized the uselessness of his frantic wishing. He could sense that Sakura was somewhere far, far away right now -- and the hole with her. There was nothing below his fists besides rock and dirt.

Tomoyo held back a sob as she replayed the memory of Sakura falling into the hole in her head. Sakura, oh Sakura...Come back to me... she thought as her eyes weld up with tears. For some reason, Tomoyo could not shake off the hopeless feeling that she would never see Sakura again...
