BRETT LEWIS ANDERSON WAS BORN ON SEPTEMBER 29,
1967
And grew up in?the Lindfield district of Haywards Heath,in one of the town's few counical houses.looking back, this is how he
describes his childhood:"Very strange. It didn't fit into any working-clas stereotypes.I wasn't born in the backstreets of Manchester or London.I was born in the suburbs. In Britain,no
one really recongnises suburban and rural areas as working class. Just because it can't be fitted into this stereotype of what working class is,they're blind to it,but that doesn't mean it doestn't exit."
As child,Brett was as (un)happy as any other."When you're a kid
you're virtually not aware of your own existence. Then you're forcd into this adult world, and sport and homework get replaced by music and sex and drugs and stuff like that."
Oats Hall Comprehensive, like the town of Haywards Heath, was ultraviolent."In small towns, there's so much violence-much more than innercities,"Brett recollects at the Warren Street offices of his record company,Nude, one Frienday evening in mid-March,1999."In small towns, everyone sort of knows each other,so there's always this personal edge:'That's the kid whose mate nicked my girlfiens' or 'That 's the kid that we can beat the shit out of!"'
As his adolescent hormones began to kick in,Brett's attenation shiftes rom an early interest in sport to music, immersing hmself in the abrasive anarcho-punk sounds of Dischang and Crass.
"Pop music is about getting your own identity, and importance, "he says. "You can't just take on someone else's thing. And this
was something that was mine. Loud, nosy music."
When his older sister Blandina left home at 16,Brett inherited her record collection:The Beatles,Pink Floyd,Kate Bush, and, singificantly,David Bowie.
