Antigone Projects In order to fully understand and appreciate a work of literature, one must be knowledgeable about the culture, society, and era in which the work was written. Literature is a reflection of its time and culture. The following projects will help you to understand different aspects of Ancient Greece, thereby helping you to appreciate Sophocles’ dramatic tragedy Antigone. The class will divided itself into five groups consisting of three (and one group of four) students. Each group will choose one of the following topics (no topic may be done by two groups) and research it. For each, a list of recommended internet sites is given (you have direct access to the sites by clicking on them). However, you may use other sites, as well as written material. After researching the topic, your group will produce some type of artifact (specified in each project) and present both your research and artifact to the class. Projects to choose from: 1. Art – Research trends in and types of Ancient Greek art. Present this information to the class, providing visual examples and names of well known artists during this time. In addition, choose two characters from Antigone and create sculptures of them in the tradition of Ancient Greece. Recommended Internet Sites: http://harpy.uccs.edu/greek/sculpture-slides.html o Greek sculpture http://crystalinks.com/greekart.html o Information on styles and trends in Ancient Greek art http://www.oocities.org/CollegePark/5219/ o Greek art of different periods 2. Music – Research trends in Ancient Greek music. Present this information to the class, providing audio clips of Greek music and names of well known musicians. Also important to note would be how music was used, that is, what was its major purpose in the culture. In addition, write “The Ballad of Antigone,” a musical retelling of Sophocles’ tragedy. You may select an existing melody and add new lyrics, or for those of you who are super-talented in this area, write your own music and lyrics. A good idea might be to mimic the musical stylings of the Ancient Greeks, so if you choose a modern-day song, you may want to choose one that has similar characteristics. Present this information to the class, providing visual examples and names of well known pieces of architecture and well known architects. In addition, design and build a monument to honor Eteocles, much like the monument Creon would have had built for him. Draw inspiration from Greek military monuments or other buildings during this time. Costume – Research trends in and types of Ancient Greek clothing styles. Present this information to the class, providing visual examples. Included in your research should not only be clothing, but also hairstyles, jewelry, etc. In addition, create costumes for three characters in Antigone based on the research you found. Keep in mind the social and economic status of the characters when designing the costumes. You may present these costumes as sketches, or, for those of you who are seamstresses, you may make costumes to be modeled by fellow group members/classmates or dolls. Each presentation must be between 10-12 minutes long. 2. Make your presentation interesting. I highly recommend using Power Point to aid your presentation and to list important points and display graphics and pictures. 3. Each member of the group will be graded separately on her performance during the presentation, and each group will rate its members to see that work is divided equally.
