It would be a very good idea to print out many of these pages and place them in a First Aid Notebook that you can keep handy in your house. If you travel, do up two First Aid Notebooks and keep the other one in your vehicle.

There is a vet on duty at this centre 24 hours a day, so keep these phone numbers handy, just in case. They have an "800" phone number with a $30 charge (they take Visa, Master Card, and American Express) per call and a "900" number which you might be referred to with a $20 minimum for 5 minutes and $2.95 for each additional minute (the average call takes 4-7 minutes). They have an entire "How to Prevent Poisoning" section which lists, by category, all of the things that can be poisonous to your dog or cat. Take the time to read this and hope you never need to use it.

Two dogs in the circle of dogs I "know" have contracted this potentially deadly disease. This disease is extremely difficult to spot as the occurrence is rare, but there have been many more cases reported. Familiarise yourself with the symptoms and how the disease is contracted. One version of Lepto is vaccinated against (DHLP), but there are other strains that are not.
