Bridging the Gap for Better Communication

Definition: Any disorder not caused at birth (i.e. congenital disorders) in the prenatal or perinatal stages. acquired disorders usually have an organic cause (e.g. cerebralvascular accident, head injury, etc). the most common acquired disorders of communication are Aphasia, Dysarthria, Dysprxia. They can occur at any time in a person's life.

Aphasia - Commonly caused by stroke, head injury or brain tumor that affected part of the brain, usually the left cerebral hemisphere which controls the use of language - both comprehension and expressive language. Both children and adults can be affected. There are different classifications to describe different types of Aphasia.

Dysarthria - Group of disorders that stem from defined neurological conditions and that manifest abnormalities of respiration, phonation, resonance and articulation.

Dyspraxia - Developmental or acquired disorder usually associated with central nervous system impairment. There is a total inability to program certain skilled purposeful movements in the absence of loss of motor power, sensation or co-ordination.
