Bridging the Gap for Better Communication

DEFINITION: The transfer of the food bolus from the mouth to the stomach avoiding the airway, i.e. the trachea. The bolus goes through stages before it reaches the stomach after it is prepared by the saliva from the salivary glands.

Commonly, problems with swallowing are caused by stroke, head injury or congenital conditions (e.g. cleft palate)
