REVIEWS "...Ziel doesn't shy from controversy. The photographs and art that illustrate the volume are its primary strength, complementing well the prose thick with detail...For Rond Ziel, history is a dynamic pursuit and not a rehashing of dead material." - Bangor Daily News (Maine) "I was well aware of Mr. Ziel as a noted railroad historian/author and was both surprised and delighted when he came to our office. He has proven to be as meticulous in his naval history research as he has been in his railroad work." - E.C. Finney, Jr., Museum Specialist, U.S. Naval Historical Center |
REVIEWS (continued...) "It is truly impressive...right in suggesting it is the unobserved war. My congratulations.: - William F. Bukley, Jr., National Review "Congratulations for your achievement...research and discussion of the beginnings of America's involvement in teh Phillipines is particularly intriguing. President Fidel V. Ramos will find your work to be most informative as well as entertaining". - Philippine ambassador to the United Nations (The ambassador personally presented the book to President Ramos) "Ziel is doubtless correct in seeing this war as a turning point in world history...helps recapture the color, drama and immediacy of this action-packed but frief war:. - John A. Gable, Executive Director, Theodore Roosevelt Association |

A NEW PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR By Ron Ziel |
Up until now, this reviewer believed that the last word in pictorial history of the Spanish-American War was Frank Friedel's acclaimed work, The Splendid Little War, published more than thirty years ago. That was until I read Ron Ziel's new book. Here is a competent history of the war, with hundreds of photographs, illustrations, and drawings, both in color and monochrome, many seen in print for the first time, presented in an elegantly printed and bound edition. Mr. Ziel is certainly no newcomer to the study and writing of history. He has written 15 books on the subject, concentrating primarily on the history of railroads. However, this is a new direction for him, and I must say that he has pursued it to a high degree of excellence. Mr. Ziel's coverage of the various aspects and the progress of the war itself are most thoroughly documented with illustration sof participants, ordnance, locations, and related aspects. All are fully identified, often with coment. The author's style of writing is most easy to digest, using the narrative form, but including numerous anecdotes. The personalization of the participants at all levels lends a human aspect to the activities and cannot but heighten the interest of the reader. Much biographical information about the major figures is included. The complexities of military and naval strategy are simplified and easily digestible. This is not a book written primarily for historians, but would be enjoyable and fully understandable to any interested reader. - Michael L. Manson, Ed.D., in the Theodore Roosevel Association Journal |

Aughors Ziel and Huxtable were among the most active of the 'steam spies'. The text...and the extended photo captions make for entertaining, informative reading. Most interesting are the anecdotes recounting the authors' and others' brushes with the authorities." TRAINS |
