Retelling the Story of Paisley

At the end of the eighteenth century, European army officers and travelers to Kashmir returned home with presents for their wives: the palm-embroidered shawls that had warmed Himalayan women for 500 years.  A gift made its way to Empress Josephine and soon woman frequenting the courts of Europe were draped ankle to should in swirls of red and rust.  The shawls were huge, two by three-and-a-half meters.  They had to be folded in half to be worn.

Since importing fabric from Kashmir was costly, mills sprang up in France and of course Paisley, Scotland, turning out an endless profusion of India flora.

Queen Victoria also fell in love with paisleys from India.  Now after a century of decline, they're all the rage in Bordeaux, France.
