Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen Connected Maps

These are more recent Sugarbush maps from 1978 to the present. They include both Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen, starting with the era in which they were known as "Sugarbush Valley" and "Sugarbush North" respectively. The "Valley" was dropped from the name of the entire resort in the mid-80's, but the individual area names would change many times. Lincoln Peak at this point in the mid-80's was "Sugarbush," while Mt. Ellen was still "Sugarbush North;" later, Lincoln Peak would then become "Sugarbush South," followed by "South Basin" in the late 80's. At this point, Mt. Ellen bore its current name. By the early 90's however, Lincoln Peak was back to "Sugarbush South" and Mt. Ellen was "Sugarbush North." By the mid-90's though, the areas had been given their current names. Now that you've had a lesson in the history of the names of the areas of Sugarbush, click the images for larger versions.

1978-1979

New Trails/Lifts: Technically, all Mt. Ellen trails, Tranquilizer Poma, see notes; Spring Fling Triple, Spring Fling, Lower Snowball.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: The New Trail > Heidi Ho, Ski School Chair > Village Chair, Number Four Chair > Novice Double Chair.
Other Changes/Notes: This is the first map that shows Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen under one name. Strangely, there is a new lift to replace the old T-Bar, even though it had disappeared by the last Lincoln Peak-only map. The Spring Fling Chair and Spring Fling, as well the splitting of Snowball, are new as well.

1979-1980

New Trails/Lifts: Proposal for North Ridge Lift.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: All trails at Mt. Ellen except Upper and Lower FIS, Low Road, Inverness, The Cliffs, Snowflake, Superslope > This Way, Snowscape > That Way.
Other Changes/Notes: Most of the Mt. Ellen names in this map are current, though Lower Rim Run is called "Chicane."

1983-1984

New Trails/Lifts: North Ridge Double, Encore, Bravo, G.M.V.S. Poma, Northridge Expressway, Crossover, Ripcord, Parachute.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Tranquilizer Poma.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: None.
Other Changes/Notes: None.

1986-1987

New Trails/Lifts: Sugar Bravo Triple, Heaven's Gate Triple, Birdland, Valley House Traverse, Heaven's Gate Traverse, Bailout, Lower Village Run, Drop Off, Beginner's Poma.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Paradise Extension, Low Road, Main Stream, Cat's Meow, Meeting Place, Funnel.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Parachute - Ripcord consolidation, Lower Spillsville > Lower Paradise, Straight Shot - North Star consolidation, Tranquilizer > Racer's Edge, Poma Lift > North Link Poma, This Way > Birch Run, That Way > Sunrise, Novice Chair > Ski School Chair.
Other Changes/Notes: Valley House Traverse, a cut that has existed in some form since the creation of Sugarbush, is now named. Much trail consolidation has occurred; many trails that in the last map have a "Lower" section as a different trail now are simply one. Main Stream is gone, though it will return. The fact that the "Poma Lift" at Lincoln Peak is now known as North Link was because the original plan for the inter-mountain chair was to make it over that ridge. When ASC built Slide Brook, they probably just took the Link name and changed it to Lynx to give it a more nature-like feel.

1991-1992

New Trails/Lifts: Green Mountain Express Quad, Summit Quad, Inverness Quad, Beginner's Tow, Coffee Run, Header, The Wave (Halfpipe), Sugarbear Forest, Castlerock Runout.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Beginner's T-Bar, Snowflake.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: (Unnamed Reverse Traverse) > Heaven's Gate Traverse, Beginners' Slope > First Time, Glades > Murphy's Glades.
Other Changes/Notes: Lots of "Lowers" have re-appeared, and many trails that were cut but not named or were parts of other trails now are individual trails. Reverse Traverse, which had been cut in the early 70's but but not named, has now become Heaven's Gate Traverse, and what was Heaven's Gate Traverse is now unnamed. Unrelated to trails, this is the first map done by James Niehues, today one of the top trail map artists. This is also the first appearance of the Double Black Diamond.

1992-1993

New Trails/Lifts: Way Back, Zip, Spread Eagle, Upper Lookin' Good, Mainstream, Reverse Traverse, Easy Does It, Tsunami (Halfpipe), Out Road, In Road.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Lower Village Run > Out To Lunch.
Other Changes/Notes: The trail that in the last map bore the name "Heaven's Gate Traverse" has become Reverse Traverse, and the original Heaven's Gate Traverse now bears its name again. Main Stream/Mainstream is back as well. Lots of Lowers have also come on the map. Interestingly, the middle of the painting is actually removed from the map, probably just to make the map smaller.

1995-1996

New Trails/Lifts: Slide Brook Express, North Lynx Triple, Magic Carpet, Green Mountain Quad, Super Bravo Express, Gatehouse Express, North Ridge Express.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Green Mountain Express, North Link Poma, Sugar Bravo Chair, Gatehouse Chair, North Ridge Chair.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Slowpoke > Nancy, Which Way > Sid.
Other Changes/Notes: Though the North Lynx is new, Morning Star does not yet appear. The changed trail names are both terrain parks, and both names are a strangely-chosen reference to Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, a famous punk rock singer and his girlfriend.

1996-1997

New Trails/Lifts: Eden, Morning Star
Removed Trails/Lifts:
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Lower Snowball/Racer's Edge > Mountain Rage Snow Park, Nancy > Slowpoke, Sid > Which Way, Beginner's Tow has moved from Easy Does It to Easy Rider.
Other Changes/Notes: Seen here is the first appearance of "Family Adventureland," though it appears the Nynex sponsorship was lost by the next year. Also, prior to this map, Lower Snowball had two sections. Now the one that would later become Spring Road is the only Lower Snowball, and the other, which was apparently combined with Racer's Edge through the destruction of a few stands of trees, is the Mountain Rage Snow Park.

1997-1998

New Trails/Lifts: None.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Which Way > Godzilla: "The Gauntlet of Sugarbush."
Other Changes/Notes: The Godzilla terrain park would go back and forth year to year between completely taking the name of Which Way and sharing it.

1998-1999

New Trails/Lifts: "Mountain Rage" half-pipe.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Mountain Rage Snow Park > Racer's Edge.
Other Changes/Notes: The Beginner's Tow has moved again, this time to Easy Street. Also, "Godzilla..." is now simply "Godzilla Snow Park."

1999-2000

New Trails/Lifts: Deeper Sleeper, Egan's Woods, Lew's Line.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Black Diamond > Black Diamond Rush.
Other Changes/Notes: The "Rush" added to Black Diamond was removed by the 2003-2004 map. The Mountain Rage Halfpipe has also moved to the base of Mt. Ellen.

2000-2001

New Trails/Lifts: None.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Lower Snowball > Spring Road.
Other Changes/Notes: This was a mostly uneventful year for changes.

2001-2002

New Trails/Lifts: "Beginner Terrain Garden" on Easy Rider, "Intermediate Terrain Park" on Slowpoke, "Terrain Park" on Which Way.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Godzilla Snow Park > Which Way, Mountain Rage Halfpipe > Halfpipe.
Other Changes/Notes: None.

2002-2003

New Trails/Lifts: Green Mountain Express.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Green Mountain Quad, Spring Fling Triple.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Easy Street > Riemergasse
Other Changes/Notes: The Terrain Park is now on Crackerjack, the Spring Fling Race Arena is new, and the Beginner's Tow has moved again, however, this time, only in the direction it runs; the base remains in generally the same area, at the base of the Sunshine Double.

2003-2004

New Trails/Lifts: Sun Kid Teaching Lift, Tommy's Toy.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Magic Carpet, Beginner's Tow.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Spring Fling Race Arena > Legends Race Arena, Halfpipe > Superpipe.
Other Changes/Notes: There are now "Terrain Features" on Slowpoke, which appears to have lost its Blue Square.

2004-2005

New Trails/Lifts: Graduation Woods, Walt's Woods, Bravo Woods, Exterminator Woods, Wayback Woods, Semi-Tough Woods, Tumbler Woods.
Removed Trails/Lifts: None.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Riemergasse > Terrain and Rail Park.
Other Changes/Notes: Crackerjack is back as a trail, but at least in this printing of the trailmap, it had not yet had its Green Circle restored.

2005-2006

New Trails/Lifts: Cat's Meow, Snowflake, Paradise Extension (all former trails that had been removed), Castlerock Hi Road and Lo Road, Welcome Mat.
Removed Trails/Lifts: Ravenna's Way, Zip, Spread Eagle, Lower Brambles, Beginner's Poma.
Trail/Lift Name Changes: Godzilla Snow Park > Which Way.
Other Changes/Notes: Castlerock Hi and Lo Road is simply two pre-existing cuts that are the path of the service road up Castlerock. Easy Does It, a basically non-existent trail before, now is the name of the slope accompanying Tommy's Toy. Slowpoke and Crackerjack have their difficulty ratings back, though Slowpoke's is marked as a Green Circle (its actual trail sign is a Blue Square). The Sunkid has moved to the area at the bottom of the Village Chair as well.
