Apodaca
Family History-Apodaca

Here's the information I have on my Apodaca family so far. My great-grandparents parents were Guadalupe and Basilia Apodaca. Guadalupe was born on December 04 or 14th, 1881 in Chamberino, Dona Ana County, New Mexico to Daria Martines(b.1853) and Jose Vidal Apodaca(b.1843). Chamberino is a small town, almost a ghost town now, near El Paso, Texas. Guadalupe had 8 siblings that I am aware of: Tomasa(b.October 1871), Melquiades(b. 1869), Maria (b.1870), Luz(b.1868, Eligio(b. June 1875), Jose Nicolas (b.December 1867) and Alejandro (b. April 19, 1871). Guadalupe married Ramona Duran on April 02, 1906 in El Colorado, New Mexico (now called Rodey) when he was 22, she was 17. I do not know much about Ramona, except that she died during the Spanish Influenza outbreak. I have found that Ramona had at least 2 children, but both had died before she did. Her death date is listed as 1918. Guadalupe then married my great grandmother, Basilia. Incidently they both had the same last name. I am still trying to find out if they were related by blood, distant cousins or just happened to have the same last name. Jose Vidal Guadalupe Apodaca Padilla was christened on April 29, 1833 at Nuestra Senora De Guadalupe in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He had one brother that I have found, Jose Gorgonio De La Crus Apodaca christened September 14, 1839. Vidal's parents were Jesus De La Cruz Apodaca and Maria Paula Padilla. It is unclear whether Cruz and Paula were citizens of Texas, New Mexico or Mexico. In some census', Vidal lists his parents as being born in Texas, in others it lists them as being born in Mexico. Of course, that was the time of the Alamo and the Gaddes Purchase and also, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, when New Mexico and Texas had been part of Mexico and then became part of the United States. Daria's parents were Jose Martinez and Ramona Lucero, other than their names, I have no other information Basilia Apodaca was born in 1898 in the small town of Rincon, Dona Ana County, New Mexico to Victoriano Apodaca(b.1876) and Felisita Lobato(b.187?). Basilia had 6 siblings Isidra(b. November 30, 1911), Inocente, Ernesto, Roberto(b. September 10, 1905), Apolonia(b. 1909) and Francisca(b.June 04, 1902). Victoriano's mother was Refugia "Cuca" Lovato (b.1854). Basilia and Guadalupe moved on to the small town of Derry, Sierra County, New Mexico. But only for a short while. They are found in the 1920 Sierra County census, then in the 1930 census they are found in the Powell, Park County, Wyoming census along with their 5 children. Their occupation lists them as beet field workers. Powell, is where my grandfather was born. After being in Wyoming awhile they moved on to another small town, where they finally settled. The town was called Nyssa, in the county of Malheur, Eastern Oregon. My grandpas has told me before about the prejudices him and his family endured when they first came to Nyssa. They were one of the first non-white families in the area. I can't even imagine how dificult it must have been for my grandpa and his brothers and sisters, for they were only small children. My grandpa remembers the kids from school following him home and throwing rocks at him and his brothers and sisters, being called obscenties because of his brown skin, and so much more. Yet we endured and the town of Nyssa will never be the same. I am proud to be an Apodaca, and always will be.
