FACTS ABOUT SENIOR CITIZENS AND SUICIDE
- While older people made up only 12.8% of the population in 1995, they
committed 19.4% of the suicides.
- Whereas there are usually 25 attempts per completed suicide in the general
population, there are only 4 attempts per completed suicide among older people.
- One young person commits suicide every hour and 42.6 minutes--one older
person commits suicide every hour and 26.8 minutes.
- Older white males, over the age of 65, have a particularly high risk
of suicide with a rate of 42.7 per 100,000 population.
Senior Citizens are at a greater risk to commit suicide. Recognizing this
fact, Suicide Prevention Services has established the Senior Line in
the hopes of reaching out to at-risk individuals in crisis.
