Universe in the Atom
Atoms of elements such as iron, gold and oxygen are known by their characteristic spectra; each having a distinct spectrum. About a hundred of them have been found and analysed. Interestingly, they not only account for things around us, but the information about the distant stars and galaxies is also gathered by studying their spectra. However, the spectra from the galaxies are shifted towards red because the universe is expanding and all the objects are moving away from each other. It is indeed wonderful that the universe can be studied by investigating the atom. The image is a manipulation of Xenon spectrum.
