A superposition occurs when some things are overlaid in a manner that they produce something new. The way they add may produce interesting effects; a pattern which would not be there if each source is examined separately. The principle of superposition, widely used in mathematics, physics and engineering, allows us to visualize a complex situation as the sum of many, simpler parts. Most of our understanding of the physical world concerns situations where the superposition principle is true. This picture can also be seen as quantum mechanical 'bra' and 'ket' vectors with matrix element in between. |
