Scaling and Duality
The overall basic structure of a crumpled paper looks the same no matter at which scale it is viewed and how much crumpling is done. Many systems in nature display this property of scaling. Here it is seen for the length-scale but scaling can be observed for other variables like energy or time. Duality is a property of a theory that tells us that description of a system at one end of the scale is very similar to the description at the other end and one can be obtained from the other. The image shows this graphically. At the lower left corner the smaller paper is stacked on the top of the bigger one. The duality is depicted by reversing the order at the upper right corner.
