FINALLY ~ CHAPTER ONE

"But I’ll tell you what - it’s better this way, because when you open the door, you know, you see the truth. Everything Sonny Corinthos touches, he destroys. Something else we got in common, huh?"

"The people you love, you know, may be bleeding all over the furniture, but at least they’re alive when you’re done with them. Ask me if I can say that. Ask me! Do you tell them you’ll protect them and then you wind up at a grave, at a hospital bed, wondering what went wrong? No? No? Ask me if I can say that."

She awoke with an overwhelming feeling of panic. She tried to take deep breaths to ease the constricting in her chest. But it wouldnt go away. And it scared her.

Perhaps it was because she could look back and remember the times this panic had seized her and the actions she took to make it stop. She remembered screaming hysterically at Virginia Benson then Virginia falling dead on the floor at the Port Charles Grille. Pulling Taggart's gun and firing wildly at Tony. Grabbing her pillow and calling it Michael. Showing up on the Quartermaine's door and telling them her son had been kidnapped. All these actions had caused her and the people she loves so much pain. More than a lifetime of pain.

See, baby I, apologize For all the things that I've done in my life

She climbed out of bed and grabbed the blue silk robe she had carelessly tossed on the floor. She put it on and tied it around her waist. Pulling it as tight as it would go. She walked to the desk on the other side of her massive bedroom and sat down. She pulled the top drawer all the way out of the desk and pulled out something she had hidden beneath the drawer. She felt the panic starting to slow slightly as she looked at them. It was a picture of her family. Her real family. She kept taking deeper and deeper breaths to try and ease the panic. And slowly she began to feel calm again.

She began to think of what had caused the panic. Her dream. She kept seeing him as he was that day. Unshaven. Foul smelling. Cruel. She tried to get the look in his eyes that day out of her mind. It was a look she had seen before. At Ferncliffe. A surreal combination of both emptiness and relentless activity. She had seen insanity at Ferncliffe and only a few months ago she had seen it again. In the eyes of Sonny Corinthos.

Jason had insisted that it was just a part of who Sonny was. These breakdowns. Jason said it proved that Sonny was a good person because he felt sorrow over the pain he had caused people. But she wasnt so easily convinced. Jason may have seen the glass on the floor and smelt the stench in the Penthouse. But he hadnt seen what she had seen. Jason hadn't seen the madman that broke the glass and eminated the stench.

I can't think, think about this crazy day

She knew the danger Sonny was putting himself and Jason in by keeping Hannah in his life. She wondered if Jason did. Jason loved Sonny so much. More than anything except Michael. She thought that maybe love was preventing Jason from seeing the danger. From seeing the insanity. Jason used to be so invincible. But now everything had changed. She was the only one who had seen Sonny that day. Not Jason. Not Johnny. Not Benny. Not even Mike. She was the only one who could see this situation straight. The only one who could see through Hannah's lies and the only one who had seen Sonny's insanity.

She knew she was coming dangerously close to doing something she would regret but she also knew she could not stand by and watch Jason go to prison. The thought of Jason in prison caused the panic to return. Images flashed uncontrollably in her mind.

Sonny breaking a whisky bottle.
The gun in Hannah's room.
Sonny getting arrested for RICO violations.
She and Jason watching Moreno's men get busted on Pier 17.
The look on Bobbie's face when Jerry was arrested at their wedding.
Jason leaning in and kissing her softly.

The panic was rising. She reassured herself that she wouldnt do anything stupid. Quickly she thought of the good choices she had made. Telling Tony that he had no rights to her unborn baby because Jason was the father. Giving Jason the power of attorney over her and Michael. Telling Bobbie the truth that she was Caroline. Going to San Francisco to find Professor Blackburn. Finding the FBI gun that proved Hannah was a secret agent.

She knew that she was closer now than ever to truly having the family she always wanted. Jason had kissed her. She hadnt grabbed him she hadnt even asked him to. He kissed her because he wanted to. She realized that her uncovering Hannah had given Jason a new respect for her. All she had to do was finish the job, get rid of Hannah for good and nothing would stand in their way.

I'm going crazy, crazy, crazy, just to thinkin about you lately I'm going crazy, crazy, crazy, just to thinkin about you baby

She put the picture back into the drawer and climbed back into bed. She knew she would not see Sonny in her dreams again tonight. They would be filled with Jason and Michael.

Carly had decided what she had to do.

Jason knew Carly was on her way to his penthouse. He had assigned Francis to guard Carly ever since she was mugged in an alley last month. Jason now suspected that Agent Larkin had been behind the attack but he kept Francis on her anyway.

I've finally realized, that you are my true love And I had a lot of time to think, and you're all seem to keep thinking, To keep thinkin of, yeahhh

Jason rubbed the bridge of his nose and then glanced at his watch. It was half past three in the morning. He knew that Carly's trip could mean nothing but trouble but never the less he had been excited when Francis' call came in.

"Is there anything I can do for you now, Bobbie?"

"No, thanks. Actually - Actually. There is something. If you love Carly, tell her. I'm not going to pretend to know your heart. But I know Carly. And I love her. Ask yourself if you want a life with her. And if you do. Tell her."

"I'm not really good at imagining things, but I can't imagine my life without Carly in it."

"Well, then. No matter how hard it is, the two of you should find a way to be together."

Jason had decided after speaking to Bobbie that he would tell Carly how he felt. But even Jason wasnt really sure how what he felt for Carly. He knew he wanted her in his life forever and he was tired of fighting that feeling. He was going to take a chance and trust her with his heart.

And now I know I need you each and every day I can't live without you, so don't run away

But Jason knew now was not the time. He had to make sure things were safe for Carly and Michael. He had to convince Sonny that keeping Hannah around was asking for trouble. He was so conflicted. His loyalty to Sonny on one side - yet his loyalty to Carly, Michael, and his men on the other. Right now Carly was the only one who knew about Hannah besides him and Sonny.

I can't think, think about this crazy day I lose sleep just to daydream about you baby I'm going crazy, crazy, crazy, just to thinkin about you lately

Jason walked over to the door of his penthouse. "Johnny come in here for a minute."

Hannah slipped quietly out of bed and walked over to the door of the bedroom. She watched Sonny sleeping peacefully and felt a familiar tug at her heart. She knew that she should go downstairs and look in his desk but she felt as though her legs weighed a thousand pounds. She watched him breathing in and out. He had trusted her enough to let her into his house and his heart and his bed. And this was how she was going repay him? By sending him and Jason to prison? Hannah pushed the self accusations away and quietly made her way downstairs.

I can't live without you, so don't run away Baby you say that you love me, so why would you leave me

She walked quietly to Sonny's desk and sat down. She quietly pulled out a few papers and looked them over. Coffee receipts. Employee payroll. Then she saw it. A small black datebook sticking out from beneath the long stacks of papers. She quickly pulled it out and it opened to tomorrow's date, November 30th. She saw a few things penciled in then at the very bottom of the page "Meeting: Moreno Pier 22". She felt her heart jump with excitement and dread almost simultaneously. Excited that she had finally found her bust and dread at the inevitable.

I'm going crazy, crazy, crazy, just to thinkin about you lately I'm going crazy, crazy, crazy, just to thinkin about you baby

She had tried to prolong her time with Sonny as much as possible but Agent Ford had given her an ultimatum. Bring in the information to bring Sonny down by the end of the week or go back to pushing papers in some basement with no field assignments ever again.

She remembered how hard she had worked to get this assignment. First in college, then in the Academy then her struggle to get field assignments. Sonny Corinthos had been her first and she had blown it. Blown it by falling in love with him. Blown it by caring for Jason who she would have to take down as well.

But she had no choice. She pulled out her cell phone and dialed the only number she was allowed to call on it.

"Larkin." The voice across the line was eager.

"Meeting with Moreno. Tomorrow night at 11pm. Pier 22." She choked the words out.

"Great job, Hannah. Corinthos. Morgan, and Moreno all in one shot. You're going to make up for all your stalling with this one." She could hear Larkin salivating through the phone. He would get just as much credit for this bust as she would.

"Just be there and get this over with." Hannah hissed and hung up. She lowered her head into her hands. Forgive me, Sonny. Oh God, forgive me.

As Hannah prayed for absolution she never heard Sonny slip quietly back up the stairs.
