The latter years of 90's was indeed a great time to
be involved with music and having successfully evaded the Australian immigration
authorities, Ted Sulcowicz's time hidden away by the sea at Dalmeny (south coast
NSW) was quite productive. In these years his output was quite prodigious, working
not only on his music but also on writing and video projects. Nowadays though he
concentrates totally on music. Sadly very little of the Dalmeny material exists due
to the great "Bermagui Fire of '97". Ted's first act in Dalmeny was to set up the "Broulee" label ( the forerunner to the "Sweda" label ) - putting out material under the names "Sarah Tonin","Flem Grill", "Jim Angel", "Fermented Manuel", "Ploonba" and "Ratbag & Bowgla". He also DJed under the name "DJ Zoan" with his infamous partner "King Korg". |

Very little is known about these "artists"
but this newspaper article did appear in the South Coast Herald about a night put
on the Broulee label one summer evening in Dalmeny "Dalmeny Niteclub review - DJ Zoan and King Korg" After a messup in the bookings the team of DJ Zoan + King Korg were accidentally sent to the Fruiterer's Club in Bermagui....the crowd started getting very ugly when Zoan & Korg started the set with earblazing (Turkish) techno..a tap on the shoulder from Club president Dan Mayo resulted in them being heavily chastised, the term "bloody idiots" being bandied about rather freely... a drastic change of plans was called for .....Zoan slipped on a fully ambient drone from local act Sarah Tonin's debut 12" ( "Sailor Toupe" ) mixed with an acetate ten inch of sharpening cutlery by Eric Littlelotta over which King Korg began to sing such tunes as "Do the Hokey Pokey" and "YMCA" .. they had locked onto the magic formula.. the crowd was happy.. it didn't matter that Phil Sigsworth was totally sloshed up the back of the hall and kept shouting "Show us ya tits" .. it didn't matter the lads didn't get to play their collection of Mego gems..nothing else mattered .. the gig was saved. Footnote The act the Fruiterer's Club folks were expecting (The Fairfield Scottish Pipe Band ) were in fact sent to the Dalmeny RSL. However the suitably "juiced-up" crowd totally loved them. Local lad Mark Harpic claimed the Pipe Band "was the future of music". The night only turned ugly when they were repeatedly asked to take off their kilts by club owner Mallie Melgdoum, resulting in a Prize-A shiner for the poor unfortunate proprietor.

At one point Ted Sulcowicz momentarily branched out
into other fields - mostly writing and video work, with the odd radio performance. Working for local radio station 2BE, Sulcowicz and some pals did some experimental work under the the name "Ham and Zwiger". Here's what the promotional handbill said "....the collective are presently working on a special "radio work" to be broadcast very soon. The program will feature the many sounds of optic surgery, manipulated live to air by Big Trevor Tebbutt ( tape manipulation), Jim Cascone ( surgical instruments), Brett Chorley ( pumpkin knife ) and Rithard Dlemp ( ranting ). Hint : it should be on the same station as our last broadcast ( called "The Joneral's Bajongies" ) but we're not sure if they'll let us back in" No tapes of this rather odd sounding broadcast are known to exist. Some of Sulcowicz's videowork was also released. "...Sarah Tonin is proud to announce in collaboration with the Orec Label a VHS by Bloodes-a-Gujjy ( featuring V-Jay Tom Yum Goong ). Imaginary noise opera of the mind, with guest visual manipulations by the Czech video artist Eam Amdreou who you all know from his work on the video "5:50 Off The Air,". Soundtrack available seperately on request" |
