August 17, 2008 Research: Homemade Cleaners
Top-4 Environmentally-Friendly Cleaning Supplies:
- Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) - Arm & Hammer Baking Soda [baking soda applications: W] has been around for more than 155 years (since 1846); it has over 50 uses and an eco-friendly stamp of approval; some uses: tooth whitener; deodorant (apply a small amount with a damp washcloth; absorbs perspiration & neutralizes odors); dandruff shampoo (get your hair wet; rub in a handful of baking soda; rinse thoroughly; stop using store-bought shampoo altogether; hair will feel dry initially; after a few weeks, your hair's softness will return, as your body produces its natural oils); dishwasher detergent (1 Tbsp Borax & 1 Tbsp baking soda; mix together and add to dishwasher detergent compartment; tip: you could mix up a big batch, but keep it away from children); bathtub cleaner (mix thick paste of vinegar and baking soda); acne remedy (use with water to make a paste; dries up the oil on the skin); carpet cleaner (spot remover: see White Vinegar entry below); athlete's foot (see White Vinegar entry below); smother small fires; make healthy drinks, treat insect bites, allergic reactions & sunstroke (two cups of baking soda in your bath for the two previous conditions); all-purpose cleaner (put a qt of water, 4 tsp baking soda & half a cup of vinegar in a spray bottle and keep handy)
- White Vinegar [W] - some uses: ant killer (mix equal parts water and vinegar; wipe down surfaces; reason it works: ants don't like the smell of vinegar and it removes scent trails ants use to get around); carpet cleaner (spot remover: mix vinegar and baking soda to form paste; work into stain with old toothbrush; allow to dry; vacuum; reason it works: acetic acid dissolves stains); athlete's foot (soak feet in equal parts water and white or apple cider vinegar for 15 minutes twice a day; dry feet thoroughly; place shoes out in sun to kill fungus; each night, sprinkle baking soda in shoes to dry up moisture)
- Borax (sodium borate) [W] - sells under the name 20 Mule Team [W] and can be found in the laundry aisle of your grocery store; this naturally occurring alkaline mineral has been in use for 4,000 years; uses: roach killer (mix equal parts sugar and Borax; sprinkle around baseboards and wherever you see roaches; reason it works: roaches like the taste of sugar; the Borax damages the roaches digestive tract and exoskelelton); dishwasher detergent (see Baking Soda entry above)
- Lemon Juice [W] (all-natural bleach alternative) - lemon juice is a bit expensive compared to the rest of these cleaners - removes stains from clothes (pour lemon juice over stain; rub area with salt; place garment in sun for several hours; wash as usual); removes stains from countertops (mix with baking soda, making a paste; apply to stain; let sit several hours; wipe clean); reason it works: the citric acid in lemons acts as a natural stain remover, bleach and sanitizer

Composting - View The Weather Channel's Forecast Earth segment, featuring King Compost (July 5, 2008; 4min, 36sec) - summary: hosted by Natalie Allen; King Compost has a PHD in soil physics; tools of the trade: pitchfork and meat thermometer; system: put on a layer of leaves, then a layer of grass (you can use kitchen waste too); add water each time you add to the pile; turn pile and check temperature of pile weekly; temperature range: 100 to 140 degrees Fahreneheit; when temperature goes down, it's ready to use; what is compost? it's the same as soil you buy from a store to grow your plants in.
Brew Your Own Biofuel - View The Weather Channel's Forecast Earth segment, featuring Dr. Marcus Eriksen (July 19, 2008; 7min, 49sec) - summary: for about $1,000 you can modify your vehicle, adding a heating element; if your vehicle is newer than 1993, you don't need the modification; you can make your own biodiesel for about $1.00 per gallon; ingredients: vegetable oil, alcohol (methanol -- a fossil fuel) & a catalyst (potassium hydroxide -- can be ordered over the internet); formula: 1 part methanol to 5 parts vegetable oil, plus a teaspoon of potassium hydroxide; mix in glass jar; put lid on and give it a good shake; let mix set for one day; the thick molasses-like heavy liquid (glycerine) will settle to bottom (glycerine can be used to make soap or composted); the lighter liquid above is the biodiesel; pour off the top layer -- the biodiesel; your fuel is ready; the aroma coming from your tailpipe will be much like that of french fries; note: brewing your own biodiesel may require you to get a permit; best to get vegetable oil from a vegetarian restaurant (no straining out of impurities is involved); chemicals are volatile -- use safety goggles, rubber gloves and clothing to cover your skin; caution: methanol vapors are toxic, so use in a well ventilated area; tailpipe emissions will be much lower than gasoline

Pests - Ants and Cockroaches
- ant killer (mix equal parts water and vinegar; wipe down surfaces; reason it works: ants don't like the smell of vinegar and it removes scent trails ants use to get around); mix borax with either syrup or jelly (just like with roaches, borax destroys an ant's digestive system, and their exoskeletons); natural ant repellants: cinnamon, mint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, garlic, bay leaves, and coffee grounds; also, cucumber and citrus peels are toxic to the fungus that ants make to feed off of
- UGA method of dealing with firearts - 1. wait until evening when it's cooler and they're not as active; 2. don't smoke or have gas on you hands; 3. don't disturb the mound; 4. "broadcast" Once and Done or Amdro in a 4-foot circle around the mound; 5. give the bait 10 days to work, then kick the mounds, administering a contact insecticide to kill any survivors; this is a powdered insecticide that you mix with water; use a long stick and push it deep into the center of the mound; remove and pour in a gallon or two of the liquid; act quickly so that the remaining ants can't get away; this method is called the Texas Two-Step

- Grits Kill Fire Ants - according to DirtDoctor.com, use regular or quickgrits, not instant grits (which have already been expanded) to kill fire ants - reason grits are thought to work: worker ants feed food substances to their larvae, who convert this into a fungal food source for the colony; grits have an antifungal quality, which disrupts the ants' feeding cycle, causing them to starve - WalterReeves.com says that killing fire ants with grits is a myth - kill-fireants.com also says that fire ants cannot be killed with grits

I recently looked into the pros and cons of consuming energy drinks [W], which included the following brands: Monster [W], Rockstar [W; founded by current CEO Russell Weiner, son of talkshow host Michael Savage], and Red Bull [W]. Eventually, I plan on trying most of the various brands.
My favorites with plain or fruity blends:
- Rockstar Original (black can) - assessment of flavor (not nutritive value):
- Rockstar Juiced - Guava (purple can) [Read about Guava the fruit at Wikipedia] - assessment of flavor (not nutritive value):
My favorites among the coffee blends:
- Rockstar Roasted Mocha (dark-brown can) - assessment of flavor (not nutritive value):
- Monster Russian (red can) - assessment of flavor (not nutritive value):
Most energy drinks claim to be rich in the following ingredients:
- B Vitamins [W]: B2, B3, B5 (aka calcium pantothenate), B6, and B12
- Taurine [W]
- Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract [W]
- Caffeine [W]
- Guarana Seed Extract [W]
- Panax Ginseng Extract [W]
And sometimes these ingredients:
- Inositol [W]
- L-Carnitine [W]
- Milk Thistle Extract [W] - there are claims that it protects the liver and greatly improves its function; also: body builders use it for post-cycle therapy; it is used for lowering cholesterol levels; reducing insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes who also have cirrhosis; reducing the growth of cancer cells in breast, cervical, and prostate cancers; used to reduce the effects of a hangover
- Acesulfame Potassium [W] - an artificial sweetener - 200 times sweeter than table sugar, with a slighter bitter aftertaste (I think that this is the secret flavor in Rockstar's drinks.)
As part of my study, I also tried the plain Monster (black can with green writing; okay, but nowhere near as appealing as the Rockstar Juiced), the Monster Heavy Metal (big 32-oz. can with green apple taste; more appealing than the original flavor), the Monster Java Loca Moca (tan can; tasted flat, with no kick), and Red Bull (had an unappealing "tart" aftertaste).
My feeling at this point is that a person should drink no more than 2 cans per week, else you only end up with an unhealthy addiction ... because the body acclimatizes very quickly to the effects and needs more the next day to achieve the same sense-sharpening benefit.

Fall Gardening at veggiegardeningtips.com - Cold Frame Gardening - using a tubular frame, wrapped with plastic; or an extra-large plastic box with a lid on it
University of Georgia Cooperative Extension - UGA Fall Gardening Packet - Excerpt from Fall Vegetable Crops: "Frost will eventually reap the last of the heat-loving crops like squash, tomatoes and okra. But cabbage, turnips, mustard, radishes, beets, broccoli, carrots and even English peas enjoy the cool days of autumn and early winter. Many of these can take a fairly stout frost and still survive. Cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cauliflower and kohlrabi are all good crops for fall gardens. They're best started from transplants, but they can be direct-seeded. If you seed them directly into the soil, keep the ground moist while it's still hot to give them a good start." - also: fertilizing and soil testing in the fall

Care Sheet
- Over a decade ago, I started taking care of my mom at home. She had suffered a traumatic brain injury and would require 24-hour care for the rest of her life. After a couple of years of taking care of her, I came up with this form. It has made our lives a lot simpler ... and now I offer it to you. You can see what my caresheet looks like by clicking the next page. But for best printing results, download the high-quality pdf file. It's in two pages so that those who have duplexing printers can easily print it on both sides of their sheet of paper.

Skin Breakdown on the Sacrum - AKA Treating Decubitis Ulcers
M.O.M. (Milk of Magnesia) and Sugar (1/2 and 1/2) for final-stage healing after pressure-point breakdown (aka pressure sore). Only apply to scabby, not broken, skin. Granulex (aka Granul-derm) Spray should be used if skin breakdown is in the "open sore" stage.
To make: Stir together 2 tablespoons of M.O.M. and 2 tablespoons of sugar (granulated) in a 200cc, sealable container. Can be stored in your refrigerator and reused for up to 6 months.
Application: Rub this mixture onto the affected area with cotton balls (preferred), q-tips (aka cotton swabs), or gauze (sterile preferred).
Do not cover with a dressing.
Apply every 3 days for up to 2 weeks. Then discontinue use.
Credit: Aunt Joyce supplied me with this recipe about 9 years ago. I use this recipe, with great results, 5 or 6 times a year.
Note: If you live in NE Georgia, you may have to watch that ants don't move into bed with your patient.
Layman's terms: The sacral region (sacrum) is commonly referred to as the tailbone.
For better search results, these variations on structure and spelling are also included: Granulderm Spray and Granulex Spray.

A pretty good rule to follow when choosing what to eat, is to steer clear of all white foods. It's not always the case, but the white coloration usually is a result of the product having been heavily processed / refined -- in other words: molested.
You should really scale back your use of these "white" foods:
- Bread (no more white bread)
- Chips (potato and corn; if you're gonna go this route, I recommend CapeCod brand as lesser of the evils)
- Dressings (Creamy Caesar, Ranch)
- Flour - through heavy refining, this form of wheat is stripped of 11 vitamins, plus essential vitamins and fatty acids (with 4 vitamins and a mineral added back)
- French Fries
- Mayonnaise
- Pasta (noodles)
- Rice
- Sauces (Tartar)
