The Quran Speaks Out
                                        Against Oppression

Do you think that you can enter paradise without having suffered the trials and tribulations of those who passed away before you?  They also encountered hardship and suffering, and the Messenger and the believers with him were so shaken in spirit that they cried, "When will God help us?"  Verily God's help is always near!...

Fighting is ordained for you even though you dislike it.  But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and love something which is in fact bad for you.  God knows that which is better, whereas you do not.

And they ask you concerning fighting during the sacred month.  Tell them, "Fighting therein is a very grave matter; but graver still, in the sight of God, is it to prevent access to the path of God, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred House[s] of Worship, and to drive out [their] inhabitants.
Oppression is much worse than killing."  The oppressor will not stop fighting you until he turns you away from your faith, if he can do it...  Those who believe, who forsake the domain of evil and strive hard in God's cause, may indeed look forward to God's mercy.  God is the Often-Forgiving, the Most Merciful Being.  [2:214, 216-218]

Let those who fight for God's cause, trade the life of this world for that of the Hereafter.  Whoever fights for God's cause--whether he or she is slain or is victorious--will receive a reward of immense value.

And why should you not fight for God's cause:  for the cause of those who, being weak, are ill-treated and oppressed?  They are helpless men, women, and children who pray, "O our Lord!  Rescue us from this town whose people are oppressors!  Raise for us, out of your Grace, someone who will protect us!  Raise for us someone who will help us!"

Those who believe, fight for the Divine cause; whereas those who deny the truth fight for [an un-Godly and therefore] Satanic cause.  So fight against the friends of Satan:  feeble indeed is the cunning of Satan!  [4:74-76]

Fight [then], in God's cause, against those who wage war against you, but do not transgress moral boundaries because God does not love transgressors.  And slay them wherever you may come upon them, and drive them out from wherever they drove you out, because [their] oppression [over you] is even worse than [your] killing [them].  But fight them not near the Sacred House of Worship unless they first fight you there; however, if they fight you, slay them.  Such is the due reward of those who are bent on denying the truth.  But if they desist [in their oppression and slaughter] then, behold, God is an Often-Merciful, Most Merciful Being.  Fight against them until there is no more persecution and all worship is devoted to God alone.  But if they cease, then let there be no hostility, except to those who practice oppression.  Fight during the sacred months if you are attacked, for a violation of sanctity is subject to the law of equal retribution.

Thus, if anyone commits aggression against you, attack him just as he has attacked you--but remain conscious of God, and know that God is with those who are conscious of Him.  [2:190-194]
