S\<> Bucking Bull of the Year
RW1  Smoke Signals
The 2003 S\<> Bull Riding Series Bucking Bull of the Year was named by the riders was RW1 Smoke Signals of the S\<> Bucking Bulls string. The "little grey muley" as he was called by the riders was out a total of 10 times and ridden once. That being the series champion, Loren Bell for 73 points. It should have been alot higher.
Smoke Signals was born in April of 1999. He comes by his bucking ability from his mother who I used to use as a practice cow. Her ability earned her the name of Red Whip. She would come out of the chute really hard, jumping and kicking high, then she would turn back in either direction and spin with alot of whip, kick, and speed. If you happened to be riding her when she was spinning in one direction, she would reverse the spin. Out of about 23 times she was out of the chute, she was never ridden.
When Smoke Signals was born, I went out to ear tag him. After repeated attempts because of his mother's interference, I finally got him down on the ground and tagged him. After I let him up, he came after me. He was very mad!!!! I first bucked him as a 2 year old at a high school practice in Malta, MT. His very first trip, he turned back to the left and flung the kid out of there. I was like,"Whoa!" I didn't buck him again until he was 3 at an Indian rodeo in Box Elder. He handled his guy pretty easy.
This year Smoke Signals got off to a great start. His first trip at the first series event, he bucked off the eventual series champ, Loren Bell. Loren stated that he didn't think that little guy could buck like that. When the season started he was primarily going to the left. Well when I took him to the Box Elder UIRA rodeo, he stumbled a little bit right out of the chute and it threw him off a little. So he figured that he would go to the right. He has been doing it ever since. But if a guy is riding him in the direction he starts, he will reverse it. Guys like to get on him because he doesn't have horns, but he bucks hard. I think he is underestimated because of his small size and innocent looks. But you better be bearing down when you nod because he comes out bucking. He is a 4 year old that is going to get better. I look forward to him in the series next year. Once again, the S\<> Bucking Bull of the Year, RW1 Smoke Signals.
