A sixteen year old girl, Buffy Summers, moves to Sunnydale California with her mother. They’ve moved from LA where Buffy was in expelled from her last school. She gets shown around her new place of education -- Sunnydale High -- by Cordelia Chase, a cheerleader. She looks as if she’ll fit in well with the popular crowd until she sees Cordelia pick on a shy redhead called Willow. Making amends Buffy becomes friends with Willow, her best friend Xander, and his friend Jesse. But when she goes to the Library to collect her new books for the term the Librarian has heard of her already, and instead presents her with a book that reads ‘Vampyr’ on the cover. Startled Buffy runs off, but later on she can’t ignore her calling any longer as a dead body is found in a school locker.
Buffy Summers is the Slayer. The Chosen One. ‘One alone in all the world to stop the spread of their evil blah blah blah’. She goes back to the Librarian who lectures her about the amount of demonic activity in Sunnydale. Overhearing all of this behind the stacks of books is Xander.
Still trying to ignore what is going on, Buffy prepares and goes out for a night at the ‘Bronze’, the coolest --and only--club in town. On the way there she encounters a stranger who speaks cryptically and gives her a cross as a present. Perplexed Buffy continues to the Bronze where she chats with Willow about taking chanced, before joining an out-of-place Giles up on the balcony.
Giles lectures her about her sacred duty and criticises her lack of training. To prove him wrong Buffy points out a Vampire down in the crowd, only to panic when she sees the girl who is dancing with him is Willow. She rushes to save her new friend but by the time she’s reached the dance floor the couple have already left. Enlisting the help of Xander she goes in search of them.
Willow’s date takes her to a mausoleum and reveals himself to be a Vampire, moments later another Vampire, Darla, arrives with Jesse. Buffy and Xander turn up and she manages to kill one of the Vampires and distract Darla as the others escape. Luke, a strong fanatical Vampire, turns the tables and throws Buffy into an open coffin, before closing in on her....

Buffy:
Mr. Flutie...
Mr. Flutie: All the kids here are free to call
me Bob.
Buffy: Bob...
Mr. Flutie: But they don't.
Xander:
I'll see you around... maybe at school... since we... both... go
there.
Buffy: Great! It was nice to meet you. (She
walks off).
Xander: We both go to school. Very suave. Very
not pathetic.
Willow:
Buffy, this is Jesse and that's Xander.
Xander: Oh, me and Buffy go waaay back, old
friends, very close. Then there's that period of estrangement
where I think we were both growing as people, but now here we
are, like old times, I'm quite moved.
Jesse: Is it me, or are you turning into a
bibbling idiot?
Xander: No, it's not you.
Willow: When I'm with a boy I like, it's hard for me to say anything cool, or, or witty, or at all. I can usually make a few vowel sounds, and then I have to go away.
