HERBS FOR HORSES


Herbs for Horses

Dosage:
Divide horses weight by 150, multiply with regular dose.
(i.e. 1 TBS per 100 pounds)

Application:
Most horses will take herbs when mixed with molasses or honey,
but easiest is to mix strong infusions or dried herbs with hot mash.

All Acute infections:
2 TBS Garlic powder (fresh is better, but most horses will balk) per day.
Echinacea tincture (allow alcohol to evaporate) or extract
Actions: Anti-biotic, anti-infective, immune system assist

Cough/Colds/Astma/Muscus:
Coltsfoot, Fennel seeds, Anis seeds, Boneset, Lobelia,
Red Clover, Thyme, Plantain, Hyssop, Horehound.
Formula: Equal amounts, 1 cup or more twice a day. Mix with wet food and allow to soak,
or fix strong infusion and mix with food. Remember the Garlic
Actions: Alterative, expectorant, carminative, relaxant, anti-infective, tonic, demucent, anti-spasmodic, anti-biotic.

Sprains/Rheumatism/Stiff joints/Bone&Muscle Damage:
Comfrey, Nettle, Dandelion, Feverfew, Goldenrod, Meadowsweet, Burdock,
Devils claw (will only work if given consecutive for several weeks), Magnesium
Dosage: Equal mix, 2 cups twice a day
Actions: Astringent, expectorant, diuretic, tonic, carminative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-rheumatic

Liniment for Massage:
Poplar buds, birch leaves, comfrey, horse chestnut, witchhazel, Arnica, St. John’s Wort.
Rub in after a hot castor pack (20 minutes).
Actions: Anti-inflammatory, analgesic

Pain Relieve (acute, not chronic conditions):
Willowbark, Devil’s claw, Feverfew, Comfrey leaf, Bladderwrack
Actions: Anti-inflammatory, analgesic

Hoof Rot/Laminitis:
Nettle, Rosehips, Kelp, Fenugreek, Red Clover, Garlic, Linseed,
Silica, Zinc, Biotin (lotsa carrots:)
Actions: Astringent, diuretic, nutritive, alterative, anti-infective
Additionally: Place tampon in cleaned slit (muslin,cheesecloth etc)
and drench with a 50/50 clorix/water mix, replace at least daily.
Dries out rot within weeks. Slit needs to be kept open in order to grow close from the inside.
Slit will widen but grow shallower prior to closing all together.

Colic:
Lady’s Mantle as tonic
Laxatives: Flax, Lemon balm, Licorice, Ginger, Mint
Actions: Bulking laxative, motility, diuretic

Lung Damage (Pulmonary Hemorrhaging , EIPH) or bleeding:
Vitamins K, B6, B12, Ginseng, Echinacea
Actions: Blood clotting, healing, immune stimulant

Skin Disorders (sweet itch):
Nettle, Burdock root, Chamomille, Garlic, Rosemary
External: Honey, Myrrh, Calendula, made into salve.
Actions: Astringent, diuretic, anti-septic, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory, weak anthelmintic

Parasites:
Garlic, Thyme (worms - also expels winds)
Actions: Anti-biotic, expectorant, anti-parasitic

Tension/Irritability/Weaving:
Chamomille, Lemon Balm, Scullcap, Gotu kola, Passion flower, Kelp, Hops,
Vervain, Valerian (only if not competing, otherwise banned substance)
Actions: Sedative, relaxant, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic.

Heatstroke/Sunburn:
Tea plant (indian tea, china tea – thea sinsensis).
Make strong infusion, 2 parts to 1 of vinegar (cider if possible),
Soak cotton cloth when cold and apply.
Internally: 1 tsp cider vinegar to 2 TBS tea mixture.
Make tea with 2 TBS in 10 oz hot water, add a pinch of cinnamon or 1-2 cloves or both.
Give cold if possible (emergency: icecubes to speed cooling)

Improving Coat Condition (bloom/shine/dappling):
Red clover, Nettle, Fenugree, Calendula, Mint, Linseed.
Wash coat with nettle juice for brilliant shine.
Actions: Alterative, diuretic, astringent, tonic, carminative, anti-spasmodic

Perker Upper:
Cayenne, Siberian Ginseng, Gotu Kola, Ginger, Peppermint, Peppermint, Licorice
Actions: Circulatory and gastric stimulant, relaxing, restorative for nervous system, also calms excitable stomach. Increases stamina without causing irritation.

Prevent Aborting:
Strawberry or wild strawberry, good for nervous horses.
Dosage: 2 cups of leaves or leaves and root daily, or handful of berries daily.

Birthing:
Raspberry leaves, Rosehips, Chamomille, Nettle.
Benefitial for loater stage of gestation and helps with the birth. Rich in vitamin C.
Actions: Tonic, astringent, relaxant, galactogue, diuretic
