TOP 10 SUGGESTIONS FOR A

SUCCESSFUL TABLE TOPICS SESSION By Bill Newmark

  1. Know who you want to call upon before coming to lectern.  Ask toastmaster of evening who is speaking.  Sit in back of room to see who is available.

  2. Know what you want to ask before coming to lectern.  Put the names of those who you wish to call upon next to question.

  3. Don’t call upon speakers of the evening unless there are very few toastmasters in attendance.

  4. Don’t make the question beyond the usual scope of the person’s knowledge. Use things you learned from the person’s icebreaker to individualize question for newer toastmaster.

  5. Ask questions that are direct to enable the person answering the question to start immediately.

  6. Try to keep the questions light especially during June and December, and at dinner meetings.

  7. At the very least, make certain every toastmaster who doesn’t have a speaking role is called upon.

  8. Avoid themes that are time consuming. Keep an eye on the clock. Don’t go past 9 pm unless absolutely necessary.

  9. When possible, have themes that connect the questions together.   E.g. weather, travel, current events

  10. When possible, ask the more experienced toastmaster tougher questions.
