Soul Asylum/Johnny Bravo

April 21, 1997 at Lupo's in Providence, RI We left the house at 6:30. We found the parking garage, parked and walked to Lupo's that was just around the corner. When we turned the corner there was a line kind of long and a big read tour bus parked out front. We got there at 7:30 and the doors opened at 8:00. Inside there were bars and concession stands to the right was the stage. If you keep going straight there were table, couches, pinball machines and more concession stands. We ended up getting in the second row of people standing, center stage. I'm not even gonna complain about the people that were in front of us(I don't want to spoil my moment here)Johnny Bravo came on right at 9:00. I have heard of them and heard a few of their songs before. They were rocking. They played a short set only about 30 minutes. Soul Asylum came on around 10:00. Everyone cheered. They opened with a new song.

All but 4 or 5 songs were new. They sounded great. It's really hard to describe this experience. Dave was doing all these sexy dances. If you've ever seen them live or even in their videos you know what I'm talking about. *"Somebody to shove" just came on the radio now* "Without A Trace" was like the 3rd song they played. Played more new songs which really rocked!! I was wish that they would have played their older stuff before GDU. I would love to hear that too. "Black Gold", "Misery", Somebody to Shove", "Just Like Anyone" were the not so old songs they played.

The were about 3 people behind us that started to dance(more than everyone else) and then turned into a mini mosh pit, which was quickly broken up.(No Moshing Venue) People were singing along. This show was better than when I saw them in Aug. of 95 for a few reason 1. That show was a great woods(big venue, seating)2. We were close but not a close a we were this night. Their performance was really good their it just would have been a little better if we were closer. Anyway back to last nights show. Dave would tease the women that would stick their hands up to try to touch him he would go toward them and then pull back. They really had the place rocking.

They did some really kick ass guitar solos. After the last song they left the stage, we screamed and whistle and hooted. You know they were gonna be back cause the stage crew didn't clear the stage.

About 5 minutes later they came back out.

They told the lighting people to turn down the light really low. Dave turned and around he had put on these glasses that had two green lights. He had a mic. he wasn't playing his guitar he was just singing. Oh Wow!! Those dances he was doing :) What I would do for a video of this or even an audio tape.

They did two encore songs the second was a cover song "Back Door Man" Dave also had the glasses on for this song too.

I can't wait for the new album, the songs sound a lot like their older stuff, they just ROCK!! When they were done playing they waved bye to us. I waited around to try to get a set list but since I wasn't right up against the stage I didn't get one. It was a long set they played for about a 1 1/2 hours or maybe even more. We walked outside to the red bus and stood at the corner. There were a lot of older people there, I though I was the youngest but I saw these two boys that looked between 12-14 leave with 2 older guys their dads maybe? Anyway, Dave came out and he was headed to his bus he said he'll be right back. 5-10 minutes later he came back out. The older people there they looked like bikers, I think most of em were drunk(at least the 4 women that were there seemed to be) Dan came out of Lupo's, he was trying to get into the bus and he say's "well, I guess I'm not gonna go on the bus" When he walked me, I said hi, and held out my stub and asked if he could sign it for me, he signed it and said "Thanks for coming to the show" and I replied, Thanks for playing. Bye and he went back into Lupo's. I turned around and Dave was on the other side of the telephone booths that he was leaning against. He was signing something for some people, then he left and went into the building and the security or who ever they were wouldn't let us go in. So we turned around to head back, and this lady that was gonna borrow my pen said hey come on you come in. So we went in Dave was sitting on a table by the door, talking to some chick. The woman that brought me in got his attention for me and he signed my stub and I said "Thanks you were really really really good" he said "where we too loud?" I said no, not at all you guys KICKED ASS!! yeah That's it" I can't believe that I said that. I felt like such an idiot. I'm used to meeting bands after shows but for some reason nothing I wanted to say came out right. I wish I could have talked to him a little but there were all these older women that appeared to be drunk that were hanging around him. We left it was 12:30. Providence is not really the town two young girls should be walking around town alone. Especially since we had to go down a few dim lit streets, while guys whistle and say stuff like hey baby. We were only parked a few blocks from Lupo's. We got in the car and drove home. The highways were all under construction and full of tractor trailer trucks. We got home at 1:30. I had a very fun night. I wish I could have gone to tonight's show(April 22) at the Avalon too but it's 18+. At least I got to go at all. Their new stuff's gonna ROCK!!!
