"A Hidden Treasure" by Michan Drury

Darkness-
my flashlight is the only thing that cuts the black.
I feel my feet,
for I cannot see them, only guess where they land.
I hear water, I feel the breath of the cave,
and the loneliness of a forgotten nighttime below the earth
is consoling to my heart.
I walk without the aid of sunshine,
my senses are my only guide.
I follow a path that feet have not taken for many a year,
and the newness of a ne'er discovered treasure
hits me before I see the glimmer of the stone.
At first iit seems just an odd flash of hematite,
but upon a closer glance, the pink newness of calcite blooms
from its center.
I am awestruck by its elegance
and I gently pick and pry it from the wall that has embraced it for years.
I own a small piece of perfection now, and my search is well rewarded,
and I turn about with my cavernous flower clasped in my hand and head for home.
