SAFETY IN NEEDLE PLAY

I was asked to write for the web site and I hope this helps some of you out there to learn that even in extreme play there should be safety measures taken.

Now, I have not been in this lifestyle very long. Less than a year really. So you ask yourself why should I listen to her? Well, though I am not long in the lifestyle I happen to also be a nurse. An LPN nurse to be exact but with certified venipuncture skills for many years. It is this mostly that qualifies me to speak on this subject.

Have I experienced needle play? Yes, and it was done by another who also was a nurse and understands the need for these safety measures too.

That said, for good or ill, here is what I have to say on the subject.

First off, understanding the risks of needle play.

  • Body fluid contamination. Any time you invade the human body with a foreign object and break the skin you risk this. Leaving you open to exposure to AIDS, Hepatitis, and Herpes to name a few things.

  • Infection. Any time you break the skin with anything you risk infection of various kinds. No big deal you say? Well, try this on for size. Now days there are new organisms out there called MRSA. Now this is not the only one out there but the one to whom I am most familiar. The initials mean this, Methacillin Resistant Staph-Arious.

What that mean is that this is a Bacterium that is resistant to Penicillin and most other antibiotics. On top of that there are many strains of this bacteria too.

I know, a couple of years ago I was infected with two different strains of it. It took 10 days of oral antibiotic therapy plus 6 days of central line IV antibiotics to clear me of them both. I lost 3 months of work and was on quarantine the whole time. So I know what a nasty bug this is.

Now for the fun part. Almost all of us carry this neat stuff on our bodies all the time. It is a part of our natural flora and fauna found on our skin.

Therefore, any time you get a cut or scratch you chance getting this infection. It can cause illnesses like pneumonia, heart infections, liver infections and or what is called Sepsis.

Any and all of these can kill you if not effectively fought off with antibiotics, the right ones that is. Sepsis though is the really nasty one. With this one you don't usually know you are sick till just about every organ in your body is infected then begins to shut down.

  • Now, am I being an alarmist? Well, in a way, maybe. These are worst case situations I admit.

However, every one of them are possible with that nasty MRSA, every time your skin is broken. The idea here though, is to alert you to the very real dangers involved with any play that breaks the skin even by accident, but especially on purpose like severe knife play that draws blood or in this case needle play that yes can and often does draw blood.

No one should ever ask you to do anything at all dangerous without you being fully aware of the risks you are taking and then safety measures to be taken. Then and only then can you make an informed decision as to whether or not to go ahead and do it in spite of the risks knowing all the time that your partner will be taking all the safety precautions available to them. This, ladies and gentlemen is what SCC is about. This is how it is carried out.

Now, what can we do to make this as safe as possible?

  • Where ever body fluids contamination is a real possibility, especially blood, first off, know your partner. Get a medical history. You may even wish to have tests for herpes, HIV, and Hepatitis done before any such play is even contemplated. In this day and age this is a good idea even for basically vanilla relationships.

  • Always use sterile needles. Either the disposable ones meant for one time use or ones that can be autoclaved and are. NEVER use them over and over or on more than one person. That is how infections get started and spread. If using disposable ones have a plastic carton, (Milk jugs work well for this), that can be taped securely closed and marked with RED permanent markers BIO-HAZARD waste. That should be taken to a Pharmacy or hospital or doctors office to be properly disposed of.

  • While doing this play the one inserting the needles should be wearing rubber gloves at all times that blood and any other body fluids may be present. It has been proven that even should you sustain a needle stick by accident, by first having to pass through that glove most if not all the blood is wiped off the needle.

  • Cleanse and disinfect the area to be punctured thoroughly. Betadine solution and or Betadine soap is best for this. Also what can be used is Hibiclens and Phisohex. The last is no longer available without a prescription and the Hibiclens is really not quite as effective as the Betadine but a good substitute if you are allergic to iodine as some are.

  • * Hibiclens and Betadine can be bought at most drug stores. Phisoderm is NOT the same as Phisohex. It is a weaker solution, therefore should not be used. *

Procedure: the submissive should be very clean to begin with. Freshly showered and shaved. As free of hair on the body as possible. Then once the warm up is over they should be placed on a table or chair and securely bound. Sudden movements can cause sticks in areas not intended and deeper that intended too. Then the area to be punctured should be swabbed with a generous amount of Betadine solution or scrub and left for at the very least 5 minutes. 10 would be better though. Then alcohol swabs should remove the stain off the skin. Gloves should already be on the one doing all of this. Once the skin is prepared in this fashion you may begin the needle insertions. Hold the skin taut with one hand between thumb and forefinger and insert in a slow steady thrust. Do not drill or push and pull.

Practice on an apple or orange first, until you can insert at any level of depth at will and in on smooth motion. (for that you may use the same needle over and over). When removing the needles have alcohol swabs handy to cleanse the areas especially if they bleed. also some gauze for pressure if you should have one that bleeds freely so you can apply pressure on it till it stops bleeding. Pull each needle out one at a time with the same method you used to insert them only in reverse. A steady pull till extracted. Where necessary apply pressure with the gauze and when danger of bleeding is past then swab the area with the alcohol pad and move on to the next one. Once they are all removed look for any blood that may have dripped anywhere and cleanse it off with the alcohol. When the submissive gets home they should take a shower with a good antibacterial soap and apply antibiotic cream to any places that bled. Just to be on the safe side.

Well, that is about it. I hope this helps you all out there to be as safe as it is possible to be with this sort of play.
