Ex-MP convicted over road rage attack

From AAP
29nov01

VICTORIA's taxi industry says the penalty imposed on a former state MP for a road rage attack on an African cabbie sent a message that racial abuse was unacceptable.

Tayfun Eren, a former upper house MP, pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to assaulting and racially abusing the taxi driver after a traffic bingle in North Melbourne two years ago.

Eren, now receiving an annual disability payment of between $48,000 and $52,000, escaped conviction but was sentenced to drug and alcohol counselling, ongoing psychiatric treatment, participation in an anger management course and 75 hours' community service.

Victorian Taxi Association chief executive officer Neil Sach would not comment specifically on the penalty, but said his drivers would be "pretty pleased" with the outcome.

"We are very opposed to all forms of discrimination and it does send a message that these sort of actions won't be tolerated," he told AAP.

"It doesn't matter who the person is, this shows that that sort of thing is not on."

Mr Sach said there had been an increase in abuse and discrimination towards drivers of Muslim appearance since the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

Today's verdict would go some towards reducing the level of racial abuse, he said.

"People will have a bit more confidence in the law of the land now and perpetrators of these sort of offences will realise they can't get away with it," he said.
